Player Story
Nathan McSweeney is regarded as one of Australia's best young leaders and his career has blossomed since his move to South Australia, which lead to being called up to Australia's Test squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Originating from Queensland, McSweeney played five matches for Australia at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, which the Aussies lost in the final.
A Sheffield Shield debut for the Bulls followed the next summer in October 2018, but a frustrated McSweeney struggled to get a regular game given the strength of Queensland's top order.
Ahead of the 2021-22 summer, the talented batter made the switch to South Australia, where he quickly became an integral part of both the red and white-ball teams.
The highlight from his debut season with the Redbacks was his fourth-innings 99 not out, which sealed a drought-breaking Shield victory against New South Wales.
A breakout Shield campaign in 2022-23, which saw him hit his maiden first-class centuries, catapulted McSweeney into the Australia A side, and he was handed the co-captaincy along with Western Australia’s Aaron Hardie.
McSweeney also captained Brisbane Heat (albeit in the absence of regular skippers Usman Khawaja and Colin Munro) to the KFC BBL|13 title.
Ahead of the 2024-25 summer, it was announced that McSweeney would be installed as the full-time South Australia captain, replacing Jake Lehmann. A strong start to the season catapaulted him into the Test conversation and, after leading Australia A to twin victories over India A, was selected as an opening batter for the Test side.
