Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

Built in 1853, the MCG is an iconic ground, located just outside Melbourne CBD in the picturesque Yarra Park. Over the years, the MCG has been the stage for countless iconic moments, including the first International Cricket Test Match between Australia and England in 1877 and Sir Don Bradman's final Test appearance in 1948.

With a capacity of just over 100,000 people, the MCG is Australia's largest cricket ground making for memorable experiences.

The MCG proudly serves as the home ground for the Melbourne Stars BBL team.

Getting to the MCG

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is well-connected by public transport, cycling routes and pedestrian access. There are often road closures in the surrounding area on event days. Please visit the MCG's official website for up-to-date information. 

Public Transport Options:

The two closest train stations to the MCG are Jolimont and Richmond station. Jolimont is a short 5-min walk through Yarra Park and is ideal for those attending the Olympic Stand, Ponsford Stand or the MCC Members Reserve sections. Richmond Station is better placed for attendees of the Shane Warne Stand. 

There are a number of tram routes that run near the MCG. Tram route 70 will take you through Melbourne Park Precinct where it is a short walk to Gates 1, 5, 6 and 7. Tram Routes 40 and 75 will drop you close to Jolimont Station which is ideal for Gates 2-4.

Parking Options:

On event days, parking is available by card only for $10 in Yarra Park. Wait times may be extensive on leaving Yarra Park due to pedestrians exiting the grounds. There is also plenty of parking available in the CBD which is a 20minute walk, or short tram ride from the MCG. 

A limited number of accessible parking spots are available near the designated entry gates. A valid accessible parking permit is required. For more information and to book an accessible parking spot, please visit the MCG's official website. 

To ensure pedestrian safety, Brunton Avenue and often other surrounding streets are closed during events at the MCG. These road closures often start 90minutes before a match and continue for an hour after. 

Walking and Cycling Options:

There is plenty of bike parking options in Yarra Park along the main thoroughfares and beside the MCG warm-up cricket pitch. Securing your bike at any of these is done at your own risk. 

There are several pedestrian and cycle bridges that connect the MCG to local areas. The William Barak Bridge conveniently links to Federation Square via the Birrarung Marr Princes Walk. It takes 15-20minutes to walk from Flinders Street Station, along this route to the MCG. 

Taxi and Ride Share Pick Up/Drop Off Locations:

There are a number of Taxi and Ride Share locations around the MCG including:

  • Bus Turning Circle - Just outside the Members Reserve section and Gate 2, this is ideal for attendees with mobility needs. 
  • Rod Laver Arena - on Olympic Boulevard this is just a short walk from the MCG.
  • Pullman Hotel - up on Wellington Parade, near Jolimont Station, this is just a 5 minute walk through Yarra Park. 

Accessibility and Inclusion at the MCG

The MCG is a proud supporter of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. On event days, trained staff will welcome you and provide any support you need. 

Accessible Seating

Accessible seating is available throughout the MCG. These include easy access seats, wheelchair seating and companion spaces.

There are a number of ways to secure your accessible seat depending on which is most convenient for you 

  • Through Ticketek directly. On the booking page, there is the option to select accessible seating including wheelchair spots and for companion card holders. 
  • Contacting Ticketek's Accessible Ticket Booking line on 1300 655 915 or completing the online form. 
  • From the ticket box office at the MCG on the day of the event. Please be aware that this is subject to availability and may be sold out prior. 

Accessible Toilets

There are accessible facilities available throughout the MCG. These are a mix of male, female and unisex bathrooms. 

For guests who require extra assistance, a changing place is available at Gate 3 near the MCG shop. This is equipped with an adult-sized change table, hoist system, support rails and a duress button. 

Hearing Loops

For hearing impaired individuals, the MCG strives to make this as easy as possible, offering multiple solutions to fit your needs. For up-to-date information and to use their digital system, please visit the MCG's hearing loop page. 

Mobility Shuttle Service

For users with mobility issues, the G-train Mobility Shuttle Service is available on event days to help you get to the MCG from Jolimont and Richmond train stations, and the accessible parking area. This service is free and accessible to all patrons with mobility difficulties, including wheelchair friendly access. To use this service please wait at the designated pick up points outside Jolimont Train Station, Richmond Train Station or the accessible parking area. The service runs in 8-10minute intervals and begins 2 hours prior to an event at the MCG and runs for 30minutes after a match. 

Dietary Requirements

Multi-Faith Prayer Room

There is a single multi-faith prayer Room available on Level B1 of the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG.

Sensory Space

In consultation with Autism Spectrum Australia, the MCC Foundation has created a quiet, safe and supported sensory space within the MCG. The sensory room is located within the Sports Museum on Level 1 and is equipped for patrons of all ages who have sensory sensitivities, processing differences or other hidden disabilities. The sensory space is made of two rooms, a tiered theatre to quietly watch the match, and a multipurpose room. 

All visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and the sensory space is an alcohol-free zone. 

Parents and Families

The MCG is a family-friendly venue. 

There are four parent rooms (one in each stand) on Level 1 of the MCG. Each of these contain a private breastfeeding area with an armchair, change tables, a microwave, sink and toilet. In addition to these, most bathroom facilities throughout the stadium contain a baby change table. These are located in Male, Femal and accessible toilet blocks. 

Strollers and prams are permitted within the MCG provided they fit folded under your seat. Larger prams and strollers must be cloaked.

Cricket is proud to be a family-friend event, and we offer free public general admission tickets for children to matches at the MCG. For Domestic matches, children under the age of 6 are permitted free of charge. For International cricket, the public areas are free for children under the age of three, provided they sit on their parents' lap. All children in reserved seating areas must have a valid ticket.
