Player Story
Hailing from Chennai in India’s south, Washington Sundar featured as a batting allrounder in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup as a 16-year-old.
The following year, Sundar made his IPL debut for Rising Pune Super Giants and his economical off-spin caught the eye.
By the end of 2017, his fast-tracked rise was complete, making his ODI and T20I debuts against Sri Lanka.
A really strong performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 IPL, where his economy rate was only 5.96 across 15 matches, helped earn him a call up to India’s Test squad that travelled to Australia at the end of the year.
Injury to fellow Tamil Nadu spinner Ravichandran Ashwin allow Sundar to make his Test debut in Brisbane in early 2021, a famous match where India chased a big fourth-innings total to secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Although he was consistently around the national T20 squad from 2019 onwards, Sundar was overlooked for the 20-over World Cups in 2021, 2022 and 2024.
The offie ended a three-and-a-half year absence from the Test team with his 7-59 against New Zealand in October 2024.
