Player Story
Sam Bates grew up in Newcastle and was originally a fast bowler, before she was encouraged to take up spin after undergoing a knee reconstruction due to a soccer training accident when she was 16.
The left-arm orthodox spinner toured Dubai in 2015 with the Shooting Stars and after joining the Sydney Thunder ahead of WBBL|01, claimed the club’s first-ever WBBL wicket.
Bates has remained loyal in lime green across the decade since, leading the club’s spin attack.
But she has moved around the country throughout that time, departing the ACT Meteors after more than a decade contracted to the state and signing with Tasmania for the 2019-20 WNCL season.
Then, in 2021, she relocated to Melbourne after earning a state contract with Victoria.
