A left-arm spinner from the Gold Coast, Matthew Kuhnemann was handed a rookie contact by Queensland for 2016-17.

He is a former Australia Under-19 player and toured Sri Lanka in 2014, while he played for the Cricket Australia XI during their time in the domestic one-day competition.

He rose to prominence however in 2019 for the Brisbane Heat, taking two wickets on his BBL debut.

He impressed for the Heat over the proceeding seasons and was a crucial member of their BBL|13 championship as their most economical bowler along with 10 wickets for the season.

He earnt a Sheffield Shield debut with Queensland in February 2021, then in 2022, Kuhnemann was called up to the Australian ODI squad for their tour of Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in his four matches during the tour, putting himself in the frame for selection on future tours of the subcontinent in both white- and red-ball cricket.

That opportunity came a year later in India when he was parachuted from a Shield game at the MCG to make his Test debut in the second Border-Gavaskar match in Delhi. He retained his spot for the rest of the series, collecting a five-wicket haul in the third Test in Indore to help Australia to a nine-wicket victory.

But his red-ball opportunities for Queensland dried up in 2023-24 when leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson was preferred, with Kuhnemann signing a three-year deal to join Tasmania ahead of the 2024-25 season.
