England looked to have finally found a long-term Test opening partner for Alastair Cook when Haseeb Hameed burst on to the international scene in India in late 2016.

The right-hander was selected for England's Test tours of Bangladesh and India after becoming the youngest to 1000 runs for his county side Lancashire in 2016, his first full season at first-class level.

The teenager wasn't selected for the two Tests against Bangladesh but was handed his debut in the first Test against India in Rajkot in November, becoming England's youngest-ever Test opener.

Dubbed 'Baby Boycott' after dour former England opener Geoffrey Boycott, Hameed's returns of 31 and 82 in his maiden outing at Test level won him praise for his patience and temperament.

But it was his unbeaten 59 in England's second innings in Mohali, where he batted for 156 balls and nearly three hours with a broken finger, that sealed his reputation as one of Test cricket's most exciting young batting prospects.
