Adam Lyth was a lynchpin of Yorkshire’s successful county campaign in 2014, attracting the attention of both England fans and selectors with his skillful and mature batting and thrusting himself into contention for an opener’s spot in the Test team.
Lyth however is no new kid on the block when it comes to scoring masses of runs. After making his first-class debut in 2007, he had a breakthrough 2010 season scoring more than 1500 runs, which was enough to have his name on a list of candidates for the 2010-11 Ashes series.
While that opportunity did not eventuate and leaner years followed in 2011 and 2012, he remained a player with plenty of potential, and was the only player picked for every Yorkshire match in 2013.
Then came his performances through the 2014 domestic season, which led to more than 1400 runs, a string of player-of-the-year gongs and earned him a place in England’s Test squad for the West Indies.
His Test debut did not come on that tour, but after Jonathan Trott’s retirement following an unsuccessful return as opener, Lyth earned his first cap in the series against New Zealand in 2015.
