A strong left-handed quick, Spencer Johnson was given a rookie contract by South Australia in the 2017-18 domestic season. He made his South Australia debut in a sole one-day match in 2017, but would then be sidelined for several years with foot, stress fracture and other injuries.

However, a strong performance in Queensland's T20 Max competition earned him a spot on the Brisbane Heat list for KFC BBL|12, which saw the start of a dramatic rise from the fast bowler. 

What followed in the following 12 months was nothing short of incredible: a brilliant debut season for the Heat, a championship with the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred and finally T20 and ODI debuts for Australia (in South Africa and India, respectively).

Squeezed in there as well was his Marsh Sheffield Shield debut for South Australia, where he took a six-wicket haul and a seven-wicket haul in his first two matches. 

His second Big Bash was even better than his first, earning a reputation as one of the competition's best bowlers as he finished BBL|13 with 19 wickets, leading the Heat to their first title in over a decade. Johnson was a big winner at the auction ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League, purchased by Gujarat Titans for A$1.78m.
