Player Story

Sean Abbott's talent was identified early when he was selected to make his limited-overs debut for NSW as an 18-year-old.

However, his breakthrough season didn't come until three years later during the 2013-14 summer which saw him finish as the leading wicket-taker in the Ryobi One-Day Cup with 16, while taking 27 wickets in the Sheffield Shield.

He went on to win the Steve Waugh Medal as the NSW Blues Player of the Year before receiving a call-up to the Australian ODI and T20 squads to play Pakistan in the UAE.

Abbott took the prized wicket of Shahid Afridi in the first over of his T20 international debut, trapping him plumb in front with his fourth ball.

Abbott was part of the NSW side which won the 2015-16 Matador BBQs One Day Cup, taking 10 wickets at 19.40 in seven matches. He then won his second Steve Waugh Medal in the 2018-19 season on the back of an impressive season across all formats of the game.

Meanwhile, the allrounder had become a strike weapon in T20 cricket for the Sydney Sixers, taking the most wickets in KFC BBL|06 (20) and BBL|12 (29) and the second most in BBL|08 (22). His 165 wickets in the competition (to the end of BBL|13) is the most by any individual, and has been a regular on the county scene in England.

Consistent performances made him a regular around the Australia squad and he was a member of Australia's ODI World Cup-winning squad in 2023, playing one match against Bangladesh.

While Abbott's bowling is his primary skill, his batting cannot be underestimated, highlighted by his maiden first-class century against Tasmania in 2020 or his 41-ball century for Surrey in the T20 Blast in 2023.
