Pucovski joins Bradman in elite club

Only eight other players have achieved what the class Victorian accomplished at the WACA

Victoria youngster Will Pucovski joined an exclusive club full of Test champions after amassing a career-best 243 against Western Australia in Perth on Wednesday.

At just 20 years and 256 days, Pucovski became just the ninth player in Sheffield Shield history to score a double-century before his 21st birthday.

Among the elite octet he has now joined are Australia legends Sir Donald Bradman, Ricky Ponting, Doug Walters and Ian Chappell.

Day two highlights: WA v Victoria

The right-hander is the youngest player to score a Shield double-hundred since Ponting posted 211 against Western Australia in Hobart at the age of 19 years and 321 days.

Pucovski's 243 is also the highest score by a player under the age of 21 since 1965 when Walters amassed 253 as a 19-year-old for NSW against South Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Clem Hill is the youngest player to score 200 in the Sheffield Shield – he scored 206 for South Australia against NSW at the tender age of 18 years and 346 days way back in 1896.

It comes as no surprise that Bradman holds the highest score on this list, a 340-run effort versus Victoria in 1929 at the SCG. For what it's worth, Bradman also posted a staggering 452 against Queensland about a year later, but by then he had turned 21.

Pucovski's knock was his second Shield century after making 188 at the MCG against the Bulls last summer and he says backing up his maiden hundred was a focus this season.

"I was actually talking to Dad about it probably a month or two ago, saying 'when you get that second one it will almost be more special because you've got that one but you want to be able to back it up,'" Pucovski said on Wednesday.

"Hopefully it's not the last one I make but it was pretty special today to get that done."

Pope's perfect wrong'un nets him a maiden wicket

Pucovski's hand played a huge part in guiding Victoria to a score of 504 against the Warriors and a first-innings lead of 296 runs.

The visitors then ripped through WA’s top order, reducing them to 4-45 at stumps with two days to play.
