A state memorial for Shane Warne will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground while Rod Marsh's family considers an offer from the WA government
MCG to host Warne memorial, Marsh state funeral offered
Home to many of his greatest sports moments, Shane Warne will be publicly farewelled at the Melbourne Cricket Ground later this month.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the MCG as the venue for a state memorial service on March 30 to honour the Australian cricket legend, who died suddenly in Thailand last week.
"There's nowhere in the world more appropriate to farewell Warnie than the 'G," he tweeted on Wednesday.
The MCG was the stage of the leg spinner's famous Ashes hat-trick in 1994 and 700th Test wicket on Boxing Day in 2006, his final series before he retired from international cricket.
Ticket information for the evening event is yet to be released, but the premier said there will no crowd cap at the venue, which can hold up to 100,000 spectators.
"It'll be a very big event. It will be a celebration of his life as it should be," Mr Andrews told reporters.
The West Australian government has offered the family of Rod Marsh a state memorial service as well.
Marsh, who was born in the Perth suburb of Armadale in 1947, is expected to be laid to rest in South Australia, where he lived.
The memorial service, to commemorate his life and career and his legacy to WA cricket, will likely be held in April if the family accepts.
Marsh died on March 4, aged 74, in an Adelaide hospital after suffering a heart attack in Queensland the week before.
"Rod Marsh was an Australian legend - synonymous with long hot summers, the iconic WACA ground and the oft-repeated phrase 'bowled Lillee, caught Marsh'," WA Premier Mark McGowan said on Wednesday.
"He will be fondly remembered as one of WA's cricket greats - one of the best wicketkeepers to ever put on the gloves.
"A State Memorial Service is a fitting tribute to one of Western Australia's finest."
The service for Marsh could be held at the WACA in East Perth.
