The Perth Scorchers have failed to progress in the Oppo Champions League Twenty20 after a 13-run loss to Chennai Super Kings made it impossible for them to qualify for the semi-finals.

The KFC T20 Big Bash League champions needed to win their last two games to advance, but a rampant CSK proved too strong, knocking the Scorchers out in the group stage for the third straight year.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Scrochers captain Adam Voges would have been confident of chasing a low total at 4-69 with six overs remaining, but a whirlwind knock of 35 from 16 balls by Chennai skipper MS Dhoni helped launch his side to 6-155 from 20 overs.

The IPL franchise carried the momentum into the field, removing top-order batsmen Craig Simmons and Ashton Agar in quick succession to leave the Scorchers in trouble at 2-26.

Allrounder Mitch Marsh combined with Voges to steady the ship, but the escalating run rate and meant something had to give and unfortunately for the Scorchers it was the wicket of Marsh for 19 off 26 balls, followed by wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman and Voges shortly after.

Some late-over hitting from allrounders Ashton Turner and Nathan Coulter-Nile produced a 50-run partnership, but it was all in vain, Perth falling 13 shy of victory.

Earlier, spin twins Michael Beer and Brad Hogg suffocated Chennai during the middle overs of their innings, but overseas recruit Yasir Arafat went the journey, conceding 27 from the penultimate over of the innings to finish with 1-51 from four overs.

The Scorchers have one game remaining against Pakistan outfit Lahore Lions on Tuesday.
