Lanning set to make WBBL return

Meg Lanning is set to make her return to the Rebel WBBL on Saturday after being passed fit to play having recovered from a troublesome back injury.

The Perth Scorchers skipper has played just one game for her new club, missing their last five outings due to an ongoing back concern.

But in a major boost for the club as they head into a crucial weekend of matches against the Melbourne Renegades, the Australian captain was back at training this week before being given the all clear to return.

"It's feeling really good, I've trained this week and I'm looking forward to getting out there tomorrow," Lanning said in Perth on Friday.

"I had to get through a couple of sessions and made sure I could do everything that I needed to do and it all went really well."

Lanning admitted the back injury had been a frustrating setback after also missing the entirety of WBBL|03 due to shoulder surgery, but the right-hander wasn't willing to risk further problems by rushing back early.

"I've spent way too much time on the sidelines in the last couple of years," she said.

"It's very frustrating but that's the way it goes, that's sport, I was very keen to get back as quick as I could and I'm looking forward to this weekend.

"(But) I had to be a little bit patient there so once I did get going I wouldn't have to slow down again, hopefully that's the way it goes."

England international Amy Jones had been opening the batting alongside stand-in skipper Elyse Villani in Lanning's absence, but the 26-year-old said it was likely she'd return to the top of the order come Saturday.

"We have to work through what the batting order looks like, we've got Jones and (Nicole) Bolton as well who are good-quality batters who could bat anywhere in that order," Lanning added.

"We feel like our batting is a strength so hopefully we can do well together and put some runs on the board."

The Scorchers and Renegades will meet twice at the WACA Ground this weekend and Perth will be eager to make the most of having the home-ground advantage for the first time this season.

But Lanning knows it won't be easy against a Renegades team determined to turn around their form with one win from four matches.

Lanning will be denied a chance to go head-to-head with her younger sister Anna for the first time, with the latter not named in the Renegades' 13-player squad for the weekend.

"In patches we're done really well but I guess consistency with the ball is something we're looking to improve, we've been under pressure a little bit in the power play so hopefully we can improve there," Lanning said.

"I think the batters have done a pretty good job throughout, Villani has been playing extremely well so hopefully we can continue that and play some exciting cricket for the fans to watch."

The Scorchers will meet the Renegades at the WACA Ground on Saturday at 4.30pm WST (7.30pm AEDT) and on Sunday at 2pm WST (5pm AEDT).
