Tremain stars as Scorchers skittled

The Score: Melbourne Renegades 5-157 (Harvey 38, Harper 37; Kelly 2-30) defeated Perth Scorchers 79 (Hobson 19; Tremain 3-9, Christian 4-20) by 78 runs at Optus Stadium

The Hero: Chris Tremain’s superb performance with the ball during the power play set his team on track for a stunning victory. With his first delivery he had Cameron Bancroft dragging back onto his stumps, before he dished up the same to Shaun Marsh with the first delivery of his second over, as an inside edge bounced off Marsh’s leg and crashed into his stumps. It left the Scorchers in all sorts at 2-6 in the fourth over. The Renegades then gave Tremain a third on the trot and it paid off, as he had Mitch Marsh caught at deep mid-wicket by Kane Richardson – who had picked up a wicket of his own the previous over – for five. Suddenly, the hosts were 4-12 in the sixth. Tremain ended his four-over spell with figures of 3-9, the second most economical four-over effort ever by a Renegades bowler.

The Supporting Cast: Richardson joined in the fun with the ball during the power play, removing in-form Scorchers batter Ashton Turner who lobbed up an easy return catch. He proved near-impossible to score off during his three-over effort which reaped a brilliant 1-6. Dan Christian then added to the Scorchers’ pain, collecting 4-20 from his three overs.

The Consolation Act: It was a torrid night for the Scorchers batters, but their bowlers did give them reasons to feel optimistic early doors as a good performance led by paceman Andrew Tye (1-19 off four) and backed up by Matthew Kelly (2-30 off four) helped restrict the Renegades to 5-157.

The Injury: Renegades veteran Cameron White was on seven from six deliveries when he was forced to retire hurt in the 17th over due to a hamstring injury. The 35-year-old former international was troubled by the injury in the previous over, but tried to play on before deciding not to risk any further damage. He left the field and headed for the changing rooms, in what was a blow to the Melbourne team as they tried to build momentum towards the end of their innings.

The Stat: Chasing 158 for victory, the Scorchers had a disastrous power play with the bat, reaching 4-12 after six overs – officially the lowest-scoring power play in BBL history.

The Next Stop: The Renegades have moved to second on the table and they’ll look to consolidate that position on Wednesday when they host the Sydney Thunder at Marvel Stadium. It’s officially season over for the Scorchers, so they’ll simply be looking for consolation points when they head to the Gabba on Friday to take on the Brisbane Heat.
