Sixers crowned WBBL|02 champions

The hero: She has been the best bowler in the tournament and Sarah Aley proved that fact with a stunning performance on the biggest stage. The tournament's leading wicket-taker broke the game wide open with incredible figures of 4-0-23-4. Aley first removed the rampaging Elyse Villani (23 off 20) to halt the Scorchers march towards the target of 125. Aley then knocked over Heather Graham (2) before castling Chloe Piparo (7) and Anya Shrubsole (0) off successive balls to put the game beyond doubt. Aley was awarded the player of the match and finished WBBL|02 with 28 wickets at a staggering strike rate of 12.3.

The support cast: Healy set the tone early for the Sixers by playing an exquisite cover drive for four off the second ball she faced. The wicketkeeper batter took full advantage of the last over of the powerplay as she thrash three boundaries in five balls to give the Sixers innings a much needed boost. Healy put the foot down through the middle overs by playing some majestic drives through the off-side as she raced to 40 from 27 balls.

The cameo: Marizanne Kapp’s late order cameo of 34 from 28 balls ensured the Sixers were able to post a score that could be defended. The South African was both innovative and conventional as she blasted three boundaries to give the Sixers innings some momentum. Kapp then kept her cool with the ball in the death overs by conceding only five runs when the asking rate had crept over eight runs an over.

The run-out: Lauren Smith pulled off a stunning direct hit with an under arm throw to get rid of Scorchers skipper Suzie Bates. Fielding at mid-wicket Smith moved swiftly to her left, picked up the ball with one hand and released it in a flash to find Bates well short of her ground.

The consolation act: Anya Shrubsole might have copped a pasting in the semi-final but the English quick was sublime on the big stage of the final. Shrubsole removed opener Dane van Niekerk (1) with a lovely outswinger and kept the in-form Ashleigh Gardner in check during her economical opening burst. Bowling stump to stump and also changing her pace, Shrubsole proved impossible to get away to finish with superb figures of 4-0-17-2. She was also instrumental in the field by taking a fine diving catch to dismiss Sara McGlashan.

The turning point: Elyse Villani was making it look easy having rocketed along to 23 from 20 balls but the minute she holed out to long-on it change the dynamics of the game. The Scorchers only managed to hit two boundaries after Villani was dismissed in the sixth over.

The wash-up: That's all, folks! After 59 matches the Sydney Sixers are officially champions of the Rebel Women's Big Bash League. The Sixers victory means the trophy stays in Sydney after the Thunder won the inaugural trophy last season.
