ADELAIDE STRIKERS

It's been one-way traffic for the Strikers so far this off-season, but they have secured a huge coup by signing Jason Gillespie as coach.

Jason Gillespie will return home to coach the Strikers

While Darren Berry’s departure had delayed the Strikers’ recruiting progress, with the new coach now in place it will be full steam ahead for the BBL|04 minor premiers.

Should 'Dizzy' land an international role as England coach, as is widely touted, it could throw a new spanner in the works for the Adelaide franchise however. Gillespie has played down the possibility of him joining the international circuit with England, however, calling his roles with county side Yorkshire and the Strikers his "dream job".

Quick Single: Hussain backs Gillespie as England coach

The loss of highly-rated young spinner Adam Zampa to the Melbourne Stars was a big blow, while Johan Botha has also exited South Australia, leaving their spin stocks thin.

Out: Johan Botha (Sixers), Shaun Tait (Hurricanes), Adam Zampa (Stars)

Retained: Jono Dean, Travis Head, Brad Hodge, Ben Laughlin, Tim Ludeman, Michael Neser, Kieron Pollard, Gary Putland, Kane Richardson, Alex Ross, Craig Simmons

BRISBANE HEAT

The Heat have made their first major move in the player market by securing the world's No.1-ranked Twenty20 bowler in West Indian Samuel Badree.

The leg-spinner gives Brisbane a bona fide slow bowling threat, and erases any worries they may have had in that department following the retirement of New Zealand off-spinner Daniel Vettori.

Quick single: Badree to spin his web at Gabba

A fan favourite, Vettori was a stand-out player for more than 17 years with the Black Caps and has made himself at home with the Heat. He has signed on to coach the franchise in the BBL, filling the vacancy created by Stuart Law's departure. He is also coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Andrew Flintoff was another fan and Channel Ten commentary team favourite, but is not expected to return to the playing ranks for BBL|05, leaving one more international spot still to be filled for the Teal machine.

'Freddie' brought more than just experience to BBL|04

The Heat had to beat off interest from several BBL rivals to re-sign the big-hitting Chris Lynn, who will be looking to push his claims as one of the premier hitters in the competition, especially with the World Twenty20 coming up early in 2016.

The Heat have also bolstered their bowling stocks with the addition of Victorian Andrew Fekete, who joined from the Renegades. The 30-year-old had a breakout 2014-15 summer with Tasmania in red-ball cricket, and was the second leading wicket-taker in the Bupa Sheffield Shield, claiming 37 wickets at 24.1, and swept the player of the year awards at the Cricket Tasmania end of season dinner.

Former Australia allrounder Dan Christian was the club's leading wicket-taker last season with six scalps, but has moved south to Hobart along with rising star Simon Milenko. However, with the coaching structure now in place the club is expected to continue building on last season's disappointing return.

Heat diehards fondly remember New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum's days with the Heat and it is possible the strong New Zealand connection through coach Vettori could see the big-hitting batsman return to the Sunshine State.

In: Samuel Badree (West Indies), Andrew Fekete (Melbourne Renegades)

Out: Dan Vettori (retired, now coach), Dan Christian, Simon Milenko (both Hobart)

Retained: Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Peter Forrest, Chris Lynn, Jimmy Peirson, Nathan Reardon, Mark Steketee

HOBART HURRICANES

Undoubtedly one of the biggest – if not the biggest – signing to ever land in the Big Bash, Hobart secured number one-ranked Test and number two-ranked ODI batsman Kumar Sangakarra on a two-year deal.  The Sri Lankan addition will solidify their top order and also provide a third wicketkeeper option on the Apple Isle between other glovesmen Tim Paine and Ben Dunk.

The club has worked hard to get a mix of interstate and international players to blend with their strong home-grown talent, with several young guns coming through the Tasmanian Youth Pathway program that gave rise to Tim Paine. Tall young quick Sam Rainbird returns to the Hurricanes for BBL|05 and will be looking to make his debut in purple.

The returning Darren Sammy means both international spots for BBL|05 have now been filled.

Darren Sammy proved a fan favourite in Hobart

In: Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka), Shaun Tait (Adelaide), Dan Christian, Simon Milenko (both Brisbane)

Out: Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus (Stars), Alex Hales (UK), Shoaib Malik (Pakistan)

Retained: Tim Paine, Ben Dunk, Cameron Boyce, Darren Sammy, Jake Reed, Jon Wells, Sam Rainbird, Beau Webster.

MELBOURNE RENEGADES

It was a disappointing BBL|04 for the red half of Melbourne and the club will be keen to make amends for the fifth edition of the tournament.

New coach David Saker has been busy scouting and the club is set to make some big moves on the player front. Saker has now also been confirmed as Cricket Victoria's first-class coach, tipping the balance of power in the Bushrangers dressing room to the Renegades.

Cameron White was lured across from city-rivals Melbourne Stars but the real splash has been the signing of West Indies master-blasters Chris Gayle and the return of Dwayne Bravo.

Cameron White has been a key for the Stars

The addition of Gayle gives the Renegades the most potent opening combination in the BBL alongside Australia's Twenty20 captain Aaron Finch, but it also necessitates a change of role for White who had been opening for the Stars. He will be shuffled down the order but the change will prove no obstacle such is his versatility in this format.

Fawad Ahmed's move to the Sydney Thunder is a big blow for the club who have now lost both Australia Test squad new recruits, following the decision to let Peter Nevill go after Matthew Wade cemented his place as No.1 wicketkeeper in BBL|04.

The Renegades were led from the front by Wade in BBL|04

In other moves, Alex Doolan was released while Ben Rohrer was traded to the Thunder.

In: Cameron White (Stars), Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo (West Indies)

Out: Ben Rohrer, Fawad Ahmed (both Sydney Thunder), Andrew Fekete (Brisbane Heat), Peter Nevill, Alex Doolan, Aaron O'Brien (delisted)

Retained: Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Callum Ferguson, Nathan Rimmington, Tom Cooper, Tom Beaton, Matthew Short, Nick Winter.

MELBOURNE STARS

The green side of Melbourne may have been reeling when Cameron White moved to their cross-town, but the marquee signing of Australia captain and World Cup winner Michael Clarke soon put smiles back on the faces of the Stars faithful.

Quick single: Clarke to captain Stars in BBL|05

The team has also appointed former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming as head coach, who has been coaching IPL powerhouse Chennai Super Kings.

The addition of Adam Zampa from the Stars is a boon for the club and the young leggie, while their two international spots are secure with England internationals Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright to return.

Adam Zampa will bring his own spin to the Melbourne Stars

In: Michael Clarke, Adam Zampa (Adelaide), Evan Gulbis , Ben Hilfenhaus (both Hobart)

Out: Cameron White (Melbourne Renegades)

Retained: Michael Beer, Scott Boland, Peter Handscomb, John Hastings, David Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Kevin Pietersen, Rob Quiney, Marcus Stoinis, Tom Triffitt, Luke Wright.

PERTH SCORCHERS

Big Bash champions for the past two seasons, the Scorchers have perhaps the most settled squad in the competition. There is no word yet on their international recruits for BBL|05, with England's Michael Carberry and Pakistani Yasir Arafat playing important roles last season.

Perth Scorchers have proven the BBL benchmark

The club has locked in the bulk of their championship-calibre team to new deals, however. Energetic veteran Brad Hogg is a cult hero in the west and, currently lighting it up with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, will surely be accommodated if he chooses to go around again at age 44.

Perth remain the pace setters and will again be the team to beat.

SYDNEY SIXERS

The men in magenta will be keen to atone for last year's near miss in the Big Final and go one step further in BBL|05. To that end, they've secured the services of fast bowler Jackson Bird and international spin bowler Johan Botha.

Jackson Bird was potent with the new ball in BBL|04

Both have been given three-year contracts and are likely to form the back-bone of the bowling attack in BBL|05. The addition of Botha from Adelaide also adds some steel to the lower-order batting.

Johan Botha was a late-innings star for the Adelaide Strikers

There has been no official word on player releases, but the BBL|04 runners-up will be without fast bowling legend Brett Lee who has retired.

They still have one international spot to fill, with their playing roster again likely to be impacted by the international duty of their many Australia representatives.

In: Johan Botha (from Strikers), Jackson Bird (from Stars)

Out: Brett Lee (retired)

Retained: Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Ryan Carters, Ben Dwarshuis, Brad Haddin, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Stephen O’Keefe, Jordan Silk, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc.

SYDNEY THUNDER

Plenty of rumours, but not much in the way of concrete signings so far for Thunder Nation, but watch this space. The Thunder were quick to kick-off the off-season action when they secured Ben Rohrer's from the Melbourne Renegades, and the club this week dipped into the same well to poach Australian Test squad leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed.

Fawad traded red for green in BBL|05

Teenage sensation Jake Doran caused a stir with his switch from New South Wales to Tasmania for first-class cricket but the 18-year-old has signed on to remain with the Thunder after making his debut late in BBL|04.

South Africa superstar Jacques Kallis is confirmed to return for BBL|05 and the wiley veteran is sure to again play an important role.

Mike Hussey remains the centre of the Thunder's universe but continue moves towards a coaching and mentoring role. He is yet to feature for Chennai Super Kings in the current edition of the IPL but has been cited by players for his support, mentoring and boundless enthusiasm on the sidelines. It remains to be seen if he signs on to go around again for the Thunder in BBL|05.

Shane Watson has been touted as a possible signing with an eye to him replacing Hussey as the Thunder's central star in future years, however the Australia allrounder is still planning to feature in all three formats for the national side next summer so any appearances in the Big Bash would be limited.
