Hosts beat Sri Lanka for the first time in T20 international as Asia Cup heats up

Sabbir Rahman hit a career-best 80 as Bangladesh secured its first ever Twenty20 victory over Sri Lanka with a 23-run win in the Asia Cup on Sunday.

Sri Lanka reduced Bangladesh to a precarious 2-2, with both openers registering ducks, before Rahman steered the hosts to a challenging 7-147.

The 24-year-old hit 10 fours and three sixes, and faced only 54 balls in what proved to be a match-winning innings.

Shakib Al Hasan scored 32 to give Rahman useful support as they combined for an 82-run stand for the fourth wicket from 67 balls.

Some late hitting from Mahmudullah, who finished unbeaten on 23 from 12, helped the hosts to a competitive total.

Bangladesh's bowlers then did their job, holding Sri Lanka to 8-124 with fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain claiming 3-34 and Shakib rounding out a strong performance with 2-21.

Sri Lanka opener Dinesh Chandimal, reprieved before scoring, went on to score 37 and Shehan Jayasuriya added 26, but it wasn't enough for the Lankans, who take on India in Mirpur tomorrow (Tuesday).

Bangladesh next face Pakistan, also in Mirpur, on Wednesday, with the final scheduled for Saturday.
