County wrap: Anderson castles Root, Robson tons up again

Jimmy Anderson has dismissed his long-time England captain Joe Root for just four – but Yorkshire held on to thwart Lancashire's bid for a first Roses victory at Headingley since 2011 in the County Championship.

Following on, Yorkshire started their second innings 187 runs behind on Sunday, with a minimum of 85 overs remaining, and slipped to 3-45, with Root one of the fallen batters.

On the way to 2-17 from his 15 overs, on-song Anderson ripped out Root's middle and off stumps with a delivery which kept low just after lunch.

But Harry Brook's excellent summer continued with an unbeaten 82 off 157 balls, helping Yorkshire reach 6-169 from 78 overs to seal the draw.

Division One leaders Surrey had to settle for a draw with Kent after rain ruined the final day at Beckenham.

Just 9.2 overs were possible, with Kent moving from their overnight second-innings score of 1-82 to 114 for no more losses during two mini sessions, still 327 runs behind Surrey's first-innings score of 9-671.

All clubs paid tribute to Andrew Symonds with a minute's silence before play following the former Aussie cricketer's death in a car crash on Saturday night. Symonds had played county cricket for Gloucestershire, Kent, Lancashire and Surrey during his career.

Warwickshire's match against Northamptonshire meandered to an inevitable draw, with just 10 wickets falling in four days at Edgbaston, but Aussies Nathan McAndrew and Matt Kelly were able to hold their head high.

Warwickshire's McAndrew had taken 3-121 from 35 overs in the first innings when Northants racked up 6-597dec, while Kelly bagged 1-62 from 23 overs as the home side hit 4-568 in reply before hands were shaken.

Sam Hain (202) and Matt Lamb (155) extended their partnership to an unbroken 254, a Warwickshire fifth-wicket record against Northamptonshire.

Sussex were thwarted by Leicestershire at Grace Road thanks to an eighth-wicket partnership of 111 off 275 deliveries between Harry Swindells and Callum Parkinson and rain breaks that saw 27 overs lost.

Matthew Potts enhanced his England credentials by claiming a career-best seven-wicket haul and inspiring Durham to a dramatic 58-run victory over Glamorgan.

Potts took five scalps on the final day of their Division Two clash at the Riverside, which Glamorgan started requiring 126 runs to win with seven wickets intact after Aussie Marnus Labuschagne had departed on Saturday evening.

Potts, who had claimed two wickets on Saturday but not that of Labuschagne, was in breathtaking form as he ended the innings with figures of 7-40 and match figures of 11-101, with Glamorgan Australians Michael Neser and Michal Hogan the last two wickets to fall in successive deliveries to complete a collapse of 2-65 to 137 all out.

New England skipper Ben Stokes did not bowl for Durham in the final innings.

A second consecutive ton for Australian-born Sam Robson, combined with an afternoon downpour, denied Nottinghamshire top spot as Middlesex salvaged a draw at Lord's.

While Middlesex captain Peter Handcsomb could only manage seven before falling to Victoria teammate James Pattinson for the second time in the match, Robson's resolute knock of 101 not out thwarted Nottinghamshire's bowlers including Stuart Broad (0-24).

Pattinson (1-54 off 13) looked the most dangerous of the Nottinghamshire seamers, unleashing a ball that reared up at Robson and brushed his glove, only to drop just short of Ben Duckett at second slip.

Robson fended off another rising delivery from Pattinson through the vacant third slip area to advance to 96, then leg-glanced the next one to the boundary to bring up his hundred from 177 balls.

Matthew Renshaw's Somerset had already completed their win by an innings and 246 runs against Gloucestershire, which saw Aussie opening hopeful Marcus Harris score 32 and 15. Peter Siddle finished with match figures of 2-56 from 27 overs for Somerset.
