Ahead of his wedding next month, the T20 superstar will play for Victoria for the first time since October 2019 in their Marsh Cup match against Queensland on Wednesday
Maxwell to play first state game in 853 days
Glenn Maxwell is set to pull on Victoria's navy blue for the first time in 853 days following Australia's 4-1 Dettol T20I series win against Sri Lanka.
The Australian white-ball superstar has been included in Victoria's Marsh One-Day Cup squad for Wednesday's clash against Queensland at the Junction Oval after finishing his national commitments for the summer on Sunday.
The 33-year-old last played for the Vics on October 23, 2019, when he scored two and took 1-28 against Western Australia at the WACA. Just days earlier he had hit 57 off 76 in a Sheffield Shield match at the same venue.
Maxwell comes into the clash in sparkling form following a fruitful summer with Australia's T20 side, player-of-the-series against Sri Lanka, and in the KFC BBL for the Melbourne Stars where he smashed a competition record score of 154 not out in the final game of the season.
Victoria coach Chris Rogers confirmed to cricket.com.au on Monday that Maxwell would play and said they were "very fortunate" to be able to welcome him back.
"The form he's in, and we're pushing for the (final) in the one-day competition, so it's a huge bonus for us," Rogers said after Victoria's Sheffield Shield draw against the Bulls.
"It'll actually be the first game I've coached for Victoria where he's been playing, we just haven't seen much of him so whenever we do it's a bonus.
"Someone like a Jake Fraser-McGurk or Mackenzie Harvey, who even in the field are exceptional fielders, getting to compete with Maxi that's going to be exciting and a great learning experience for them.
"We're blessed with some of the senior players we have for Victoria and Maxi is one of those as well."
Rogers said Australia's T20 captain Aaron Finch wasn't available for the Marsh Cup match with a slight niggle in his leg and they will lose last week's century-maker in Marcus Harris as he prepares to depart for the Test tour of Pakistan on Saturday.
Maxwell could yet play a number of games for Victoria with more Marsh Cup fixtures scheduled in the next fortnight as he misses the Pakistan tour to get married.
Although he does not expect to be available for any Sheffield Shield matches this season with selectors expected to shortly announce a squad for three ODIs and a sole T20I to be played at the back-end of the Pakistan tour.
Maxwell will then link up with his Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore in April.
The right-hander has already played two matches for his beloved Premier club Fitzroy-Doncaster this season, smashing 122 off 90 balls against Geelong in January and 125 off 61 in a T20 against Northcote in December.
Victoria sits fifth on the Marsh Cup table and likely needs to win their three remaining matches to qualify for the final on March 11 at the Junction Oval.
Wednesday's Marsh Cup clash will live streamed on cricket.com.au and Kayo.
