Williamson guides Sunrisers home over Wade’s Titans

The Black Caps skipper smashed four sixes as his Sunrisers Hyderabad side eased home against Matthew Wade’s Gujarat Titans

Kane Williamson's sedate half-century set up Sunrisers Hyderabad's win over Matthew Wade’s Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League on Monday night.

Gujarat's first loss in four matches came after it posted 7-162 and Hyderabad finished with 2-168 and five balls to spare on Monday.

Williamson scored 57 off 46 balls until he was out in the 17th over, after which Nicholas Pooran hit out with 34 off 18 including the winning six over backward square leg and into the upper deck of the DY Patil Stadium.

The victory was Hyderabad's second straight after two losses to start the IPL.

Williamson and Abhishek Sharma (42 off 32) put on 64 runs for the first wicket despite batting at a slower rate than their opponents.

Williamson and Rahul Tripathi then put on another 65 for the second wicket until Tripathi retired hurt due to cramps after scoring 11 off 11 balls.

Pooran replaced Tripathi and skipper Williamson stepped on the gas. He reached his half-century off 42 balls, then fell to Hardik Pandya going for a fifth six before Pooran rounded out proceedings.

"We knew we had to build partnerships," the West Indies star said. "The wicket was challenging as it was two-paced. We restricted them really well; 160-odd on that wicket was fabulous and all our bowlers did their part."

Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of Gujarat's in-form Shubman Gill on 7, while tearaway pacer Umran Malik trapped Wade on 19 (off 19 balls).

Gujarat had fallen to 3-64 but Hardik Pandya played an anchoring role in the middle overs. He scored 50 not out off 42 balls, including four fours and a six.

Pandya put on 40 runs for the fourth wicket with David Miller, and 50 off 32 balls with Abhinav Manohar. Manohar smacked 35 off 21 balls, including five fours and a six.

But the Titans' inability to produce a final flourish cost them.
