Yadav ton in vain as England avoid T20 whitewash

Suryakumar Yadav hit a maiden international century but it wasn't enough for India to secure victory as they went down to England in a high-scoring T20 at Trent Bridge

Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant century has proved in vain as England beat India by 17 runs to earn a consolation victory in a T20 series won 2-1 by the tourists.

Chasing 216, India made a poor start as they lost Rishabh Pant in the second over before Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fell for 11 runs each to leave their side in trouble at 3-31, before Yadav took charge at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

His masterful 117 came off 55 balls and contained 14 fours and six sixes to give India hope, but the lower order crumbled and they finished on 9-198 from their 20 overs.

"It was one of the best (innings) in T20s I've seen," India captain Rohit said.

"You only get to see that every now and then.

"We know the quality of him, he's got shots all over the ground, manoeuvring the field, playing all around the ground. It's a very rare quality a batter can have and Surya definitely has all of that."

Earlier, Dawid Malan had hit six fours and five sixes in his 39-ball 77 to put England in a commanding position after they'd won the toss in the final match of the series, before late fireworks by Liam Livingstone helped them pile up 7-215 off their 20 overs.

Livingstone's unbeaten 42 from 29 balls proved vital for the hosts, after India won the opening match by 50 runs and completed a 49-run victory on Saturday to clinch the series.

"The last two performances weren't ideal but you trust the process and it's a brand that when you come to tournaments, it will pay off: being brave and aggressive and always being on the front foot," said England fast bowler Reece Topley, who took 3-22 from his four overs.

"It's a long-term goal, it's not necessarily about this series, it's the T20 World Cup – how are we going to play to be successful in that?"

The teams next play three one-day internationals starting at The Oval on Tuesday.
