Proteas seamers rip through India on day one

Test rookie Marco Jansen and the returning Duanne Olivier impress as India are bowled out for 202 at the Wanderers

South Africa have enjoyed an excellent opening day in the second Test against India, dismissing the tourists for 202 and reducing the deficit to 167 by the close for the loss of one wicket.

Left-arm quick Marco Jansen, playing in his second Test, took 4-31 in 17 overs as only KL Rahul (50) and Ravichandran Ashwin (46) provided significant resistance.

Kagiso Rabada and the returning Duanne Olivier each took 3-64 as South Africa's seamers made the most of what assistance there was at the Wanderers on Monday.

South Africa were 1-35 in reply at the close of play, with captain Dean Elgar (11no) and Keegan Petersen (14no) at the crease.

Elgar and Aiden Markram, having put on South Africa's first double-figure opening partnership in six innings, were separated at 14 when Mohammed Sami had Markram leg before.

Petersen was then dropped by wicketkeeper Risbabh Pant off Jasprit Bumrah in a disappointing finish to the day for India, which had begun badly when captain Virat Kohli was forced to withdraw with back pain.

With vice-captain Rohit Sharma also injured, Rahul took over and elected to bat after winning the toss.

That seemed a reasonable decision as he and Mayank Agarwal saw off the first hour of the new ball, but Jansen, 21, then induced an edge from Agarwal for 26.

With Olivier then taking two in two, including Ajinkya Rahane for a first-ball duck, 0-36 had become 3-49.

Rahul and Hanuma Vihari, who was brought into the team to replace Kohli, steadied the innings, adding 42, but both fell before tea.

Vihari was caught at short leg by a flying one-handed catch by Rassie van der Dussen off Rabada and Rahul at fine leg by a diving Rabada off Jansen.

Ashwin and Pant later added 40 but after the latter's wicket India fell away, the final five batters dismissed for 46.

India, seeking their first series win in South Africa, won the first Test in the three-match series.
