Josh Inglis will get first crack at auditioning for the vacancy set to be created by Aaron Finch's retirement with the West Australian recalled alongside Cameron Green for the third ODI
Inglis to partner Finch in final ODI as Aussies bat first
Australia will be batting first in the third and final Dettol ODI against New Zealand in Cairns as captain Aaron Finch looks to bow out of the format with a series sweep.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson chose to send Australia in to bat, allowing Finch first crack on the fresh Cazalys Stadium pitch.
Finch won't open with long-time partner David Warner after the Aussies announced yesterday that Warner (rested) and Marcus Stoinis (side complaint) had left the squad early.
The pair have been replaced in Australia's XI by Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, with Inglis set to join Finch at the start of the innings.
Australia XI: Aaron Finch (c), Josh Inglis, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood
New Zealand XI: Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Kane Williamson (c), Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult
Finch and Warner joined forces at the top of the order 80 times in ODIs, scoring 3,788 runs together.
After being humbled in game two on Thursday, New Zealand have made three changes to their line up, adding Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips and Lockie Ferguson in place of Martin Guptill, Michael Bracewell and Matt Henry.
Finch told teammates of his retirement from ODI cricket following their series-clinching win over New Zealand on Thursday with Australia holding an unassailable 2-0 lead.
A World Cup winner, 54-cap skipper and master tactician, Finch departs 50-over cricket with 17 centuries.
Finch said the time was right and came to his decision following their recent 2-1 series win over Zimbabwe.
But that didn't stop the emotions flowing when he told his squad.
"It was quite cool actually," Finch said with a glint in his eyes.
"Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) was in tears. It was quite funny.
"There was a lot of love I felt there, that was really cool.
"I don't usually get emotional. I maybe did slightly, but it was pretty cool."
Black Caps' off-spinner Mitchell Santner said Finch and his side will hungry for a strong performance on Sunday.
"No doubt he will come out tomorrow guns blazing and try to finish with a bang," Santner said.
"Obviously its a huge loss for them, he's done it for a long time, a power hitter.
"As a bowler, you don't mind seeing guys like that retire."
