Maxwell fires in IPL, Kohli celebrates milestone

Australian puts in a player-of-the-match performance for RCB against Mumbai after Chennai beat Kolkata in a last-ball thriller

Virat Kohli has become the first Indian batsman to notch up 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket during Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) 54-run victory over the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

But the Indian captain was happy to share his landmark day with RCB's hat-trick bowler Harshal Patel and Australian Glenn Maxwell.

Kohli saluted the Australian for his all-round match-winning performance which helped RCB to a 54-run win in Sunday's match in Dubai.

The 32-year-old Kohli is the second man after West Indian Chris Gayle to reach the landmark in both T20 and one-day international cricket.

The RCB captain got to the mark after pulling Jasprit Bumrah for six in his knock of 51 from 42 balls, joining Gayle, Keiron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and David Warner as the other players to have scored 10,000 runs in the shortest format.

Kohli has a total of 10,038 runs from 314 games at an average of 41.65 in T20s, with 3,159 of those coming while playing for India. He has scored five hundreds in the format, all for RCB.

Maxwell joined the fun as he smashed 56 off just 37 balls, including three sixes and six fours, to help propel RCB to 6-165 off their 20 overs.

Kohli called the Aussie's effort an "unbelievable" innings.

In reply, the champions Mumbai slumped to 111 all out, with Maxwell also contributing a very useful 2-23 off his four overs.

Their star with the ball, though, was fast bowler Patel, who finished with figures of 4-17 as he became the third Bangalore bowler to take a hat-trick in the IPL.

He took the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Rahul Chahar with three perfect slower deliveries.

Earlier in Abu Dhabi, Chennai Super Kings had pulled off a thrilling last-ball win over Kolkata Knight Riders, which lifted the three-time champions back to the top of the league.

Chennai won by two wickets as they successfully chased down Kolkata's 6-171 to reach 8-172 in exactly 20 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja (22 off eight balls) had all but sealed the chase for Chennai when he smashed fast bowler Prasidh Krishna for two sixes and two boundaries in the penultimate over.

But West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine (3-41) had Sam Curran caught in the deep off the first ball of the last over and then trapped Jadeja leg before wicket off the fifth delivery when only one run was needed for victory.

Deepak Chahar ensured Chennai won off the final ball as he swept Narine to midwicket as MS Dhoni's team went top with 16 points from 10 games.

Earlier, Kolkata's lower order did well to boost their total after captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and chose to bat.

Rahul Tripathi top scored with 45 off 33 but it was Nitish Rana (37 not out off 27) and Dinesh Karthik (26 off 11) who propelled Kolkata's total in the last three overs.

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood finished with figures of 2-40 off four overs, while Shardul Thakur (2-20) and Jadeja (1-21) bowled well in the middle overs.
