Warner caught short as Delhi win in Super Over

David Warner was found to have run one short in the Super Over as his Sunrisers Hyderabad team suffered a one-run defeat to the Delhi Capitals in Sunday's Indian Premier League clash.

Warner, who had earlier hit six from eight balls before he was run out by Kagiso Rabada, managed two runs from three balls he faced from Delhi spinner Akshar Patel as Hyderabad managed seven runs in the Super Over

It could have been eight if Warner's bat had slid a centimetre more as he scampered for a two off the final ball of the Super Over.

Delhi captain Rishabh Pant then reverse swept a boundary against leg-spinner Rashid Khan and Shikhar Dhawan scampered a leg bye off the final ball to steal the win.

Hyderabad sent out Warner and Kane Williamson for the Super Over, leaving England's Jonny Bairstow on the bench after he had hit 38 from just 18 balls to get the Sunrisers' chase of Delhi's 4-159 off to a flyer.

They faced left-arm spinner Patel, playing his first IPL game after recovering from coronavirus having spent 20 days in a Mumbai medical facility.

Williamson, the in-form New Zealand captain, had nearly pulled off victory for Hyderabad but while his unbeaten 66 off 51 balls was superb, it couldn't guide his team to the win.

After the match, Delhi spinner Ravi Ashwin announced he was "taking a break" from the IPL to support his family during the catastrophic second wave of COVID-19 infections sweeping the country.

Earlier, Delhi opener Prithvi Shaw had made the most of the best batting conditions of the night on the Chennai surface to strike 53 from 39 balls while Pant added 37 from 27 balls.

Australia's Steve Smith struck an unbeaten 34 from 25 balls and was buoyed by a dropped catch at short third man to close out the Delhi innings at 4-159 as he and Pant put on a 58-run partnership.

With Warner run out cheaply, Williamson was superb against the spinners to manipulate the field as he hit an unbeaten 66 from 51 balls.

Hyderabad took 38 off the final three overs to force the Super Over, with 14 of those coming from Williamson's bat.

Jagadeesha Suchith was an unlikely hero for Hyderabad in forcing the Super Over as the No.9 hit 14 from six balls, including a towering six off Rabada in the final over.

Delhi joined Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the top of the IPL table on eight points after the win, but it was a fourth defeat in five games for Hyderabad.
