Marsh ruled out after groin hit at training

Western Australia to be without their skipper for the resumption of the Shield season in Sydney

UPDATE: WA skipper Mitch Marsh will miss the resumption of the JLT Sheffield Shield season after he required minor surgery following a blow to the groin in training yesterday.

Marsh has been ruled out of Western Australia’s Shield clash against NSW Blues in Sydney after he was struck during a net session in Perth.

“Mitch was hit in the groin region while batting and was not able to complete training yesterday,” WA Sports Science Sports Medicine Manager Nick Jones said.

“As a result of the impact, Mitch has undergone a minor surgical procedure and he won’t be available for this upcoming Shield fixture.

“Mitch’s recovery will be monitored closely over the coming week, before a decision can be made around his availability for the Round 8 Shield match.”

The Warriors will name their squad for the match against the Blues on Thursday.

Marsh hasn’t batted at first-class level since the Boxing Day Test against India in December, when he posted scores of 9 and 10 before being dropped from Australia’s Test side.

Having also been left out of Australia’s one-day side and the Test squad to take on Sri Lanka, Marsh played six matches for the Perth Scorchers in the KFC BBL before turning his attention back to long-form cricket and the back-end of the Shield season.

Marsh's big statement against the Bulls

Marsh’s international career is currently in limbo after a disappointing summer that saw him on the outer in all three forms of the game ahead of the World Cup and Ashes double this year.

The selection of WA teammate Marcus Stoinis in the squad to take on Sri Lanka earlier this month confirmed Marsh is no longer considered Australia’s No.1 allrounder in long-form cricket.

"It’s disappointing to not be there … but I saw that one coming," the 27-year-old said.

"I’ve been knocked around a bit this summer. But my dream of playing Test cricket is still not over. I’m only 27. I’ll keep fighting."
