Sutherland hits Premier Cricket ton

Talented teenager Will Sutherland scored his maiden Premier Cricket century in Victoria on Saturday, while big scores were also the story of the day in New South Wales where eight players reached triple figures.

Turning out for Prahran against Geelong at the Geelong Cricket Ground, Sutherland displayed his enormous talent as he compiled a brilliant 165 for his side in a superb individual performance.

Sutherland, who made his Big Bash debut for the Melbourne Renegades earlier this summer and scored a century for Australia's under 19 team in Sri Lanka at the start of this month, flayed 18 fours and three sixes during his 217-ball stay, as Prahran were dismissed for 290 in the 83rd over late in the day.

Geelong reached 1-35 in reply at stumps, with Victorian contracted batsman Eamonn Vines unbeaten on eight at the close.

The only other century in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday came from Blake Thomson, with the Melbourne batsman hitting 148 against Essendon at the Albert Ground to help his side amass an imposing target of 5-347 from their 96 overs.

Runs were scored more freely in the NSW Premier Cricket competition on Saturday, with large scores the norm in warm conditions during a round of 50-over one-day cricket.

NSW and Melbourne Stars batsman Nick Larkin led the way with an innings of 138 for Sydney University in their victory over Campbelltown-Camden, while Englishman Zak Crawley wasn't far behind with a knock of 129 for Sydney against Manly-Warringah at Manly Oval.

Crawley has scored a whopping 621 runs at an average of almost 90 this season and created history when he scored the fastest century in NSW Premier Cricket during the conference semi-finals of the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup last month.

On that occasion the 20-year-old smashed an unbeaten century from just 42 deliveries to beat the previous record of 45 deliveries held by former South African international Johan Botha and Northern District opener Henry Hunt.

Crawley's teammate and fellow Englishman Stephen Eskinazi (115) also scored a century for Sydney against Manly-Warringah on Saturday, while other players to reach three figures were Thomas Jagot (114), Nick Bertus (113), Mitch Brown (104), Oliver Davies (100) and Tom Doyle (100).

Perhaps the most impressive performance in Premier Cricket around the country on Saturday came with the ball in Tasmania, where paceman Gabe Bell produced an amazing spell of bowling for South Hobart Sandy Bay as he picked up six wickets.

The promising Tasmanian Shield bowler took a liking to the conditions presented at Queenborough Oval as he ripped through the University of Tasmania top order to finish with figures of 6-9 from 10 overs.

Bell's spell ensured University of Tasmania were all out for a paltry 62 and fellow Shield players Alex Doolan (39 not out) and Simon Milenko (13 not out) ensured those runs were achieved in less than 10 overs.

The standout performance in Queensland Premier Cricket came from Sam Heazlett, with the Bulls batsman hitting an unbeaten 142 to help Redlands to victory over Ipswich-Logan at Ivor Marsden Memorial Park.

Ipswich-Logan scored 9-254 (dec) during the first day's play, but that score never looked like being enough with Heazlett in a savage mood for Redlands.

The 23-year-old hit 19 fours and six sixes during his 167-ball stay as Redlands moved past the victory target with more than 15 overs remaining to stay in touch with the sides battling it out for a finals position.
