Young gun Green saves WA with marathon maiden ton
A maiden first class century by Cameron Green has helped Western Australia defy the odds and force an unlikely Marsh Sheffield Shield draw against Queensland at the Gabba.
The Bulls looked poised for a quick kill when they reduced the visitors to 7-53 in their second dig ahead of lunch on day four on Tuesday, still trailing the hosts by 26 runs overall.
However, lanky allrounder Green - backing up from his impressive 87 not out in the first innings - again stood tall, striking an unbeaten 121 batting at No.9 as WA finished at 9-246 with an overall lead of 167.
First he shared a 115-run eighth wicket stand with nightwatchman Matthew Kelly (46) on Tuesday.
Then he dug deep with ex-Test seamer Jhye Richardson (21), combining for a 52-run partnership.
In the end Queensland agreed to a draw with 20 overs for the day still remaining, finally relenting to Green's remarkable resistance.
WA had resumed on Tuesday in all sorts at 4-39, still 40 runs behind the hosts after ex-Test batsman Shaun Marsh was dubiously caught behind for eight late on Monday following his first dig of 77.
Cameron Gannon (4-39) further decimated the WA innings, claiming Hilton Cartwright (17) and Josh Philippe (0) in consecutive balls to leave WA at 6-50 and be on a hat-trick for the second time in the innings.
Young quick Xavier Bartlett (3-33) then had 'keeper Josh Inglis caught behind for two to have the visitors reeling at 7-53, with an early finish looming.
Green and Kelly then dug in before Test batsman and part-time leggie Marnus Labuschagne (1-19) finally got the breakthrough late in the middle session when he had Kelly caught behind, ending the nightwatchman's patient 180-ball innings which featured seven fours.
At 8-189 by the tea break, the home side was still in the box seat but Green, Richardson and David Moody batted them into safety.
