Confident Fraser-McGurk ready for Shield debut

Victoria youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk has declared he is ready to display his enormous potential and make an immediate impact when making his Shield debut for his state.

The reigning Sheffield Shield champions announced on Sunday that Fraser-McGurk will debut against Queensland at the MCG this week, making the 17-year-old the third youngest male debutant in Victorian cricket history and the youngest since former skipper Cameron White started his career in 2001.

Fraser-McGurk's rise to the top has been on the back of a pair of impressive performances in the Toyota Futures League for the Victoria Second XI this year - he has scored 211 runs at an average of 52.75 - and the confident teenager believes he can replicate that form at the next level.

"In the Futures League I feel like I have been batting pretty well...so I feel like I am (ready)," Fraser-McGurk said at the MCG on Sunday.

"Last year I was coming to these (Shield) games watching with my mates and now being a chance to play is very exciting.

"My mates have said they will be here and they are really proud of me as they know I have worked hard for this and they are all very excited for me."

Fraser-McGurk admits nerves started to settle in as soon as he was told by selectors that his efforts while playing in the Second XI hadn't gone unnoticed and he was in the mix for a promotion.

"It was the last day of the four-day game against South Australia and I was driving out of the Junction (Oval) car park and (Victoria chairman of selectors) Andrew Lynch gave us a call and said well batted today and you are in the Shield squad for next week," he said.

"I got mum to switch over and drive the car home as I was a bit nervous. (She) was in the car with me because I am on my L's, so she has got to be there.

"I was really excited. At first I was a bit shocked, but I have been nervous ever since."

While many of his close friends are currently in the middle of sitting their VCE exams, Fraser-McGurk attends industry-based learning facility SEDA College, where he gets the opportunity to juggle his schooling with his ever-growing cricket commitments.

It also means he doesn't have to sit any exams, a fact not lost on the teen prodigy.

"At SEDA there are no exams, so thank god for that," he said.

"And they are really flexible with my commitments here (with Victoria)."

Fraser-McGurk describes himself as an aggressive batsmen that 'likes to feel bat on ball and hit the ball quite far' and he was more than happy to soak up comparisons to Australia allrounder and state teammate Glenn Maxwell.

He also has long-term goals of being able to emulate Maxwell and earn a Baggy Green cap for his country, but knows those type of dreams will have to wait as he further develops his craft at domestic level.

"They (national team aspirations) are there, but I like to keep it one step at a time and not look ahead too much," he said.

"It's been quite a frantic time here.

"I knew there were a couple of spots up for grabs with blokes in the Australia A team, but other than that I didn't really know I was going to be up there for selection."
