Career-best haul all the sweeter for 'JJ'

Jess Jonassen's brilliant 5-27 was extra special due to the presence of her parents at Sunday's second ODI in Adelaide

If Jess Jonassen's first match back in in the green and gold was special, her second was even better.

After taking 4-43 at the WACA Ground in the opening Commonwealth Bank ODI, Jonassen tore through New Zealand at Adelaide's Karen Rolton Oval on Sunday, capturing 5-27 as the hosts romped to a 95-run victory, retaining the Rose Bowl trophy in the process.

It was the left-arm orthodox spinner's second ODI five-fer and her career-best figures for Australia in the format, bettering the 5-50 she took against the same opposition at Mount Maunganui in 2016.

Jonassen only returned to Australia's one-day XI on Friday, after a tough start to the summer that saw her go under the knife after injuring her knee at a training camp in September.

She missed October's ODIs against Pakistan as a result and once she recovered and re-joined the squad, it was to run drinks during Australia's successful T20 World Cup campaign in the Caribbean, unable to break back into a winning side.

It's that time out of the playing XI that has made Jonassen appreciate her last two performances more than ever.

Jonassen collects career-best 5-27

"It's pretty special," Jonassen told cricket.com.au. "It's pretty crazy to be honest, the wicket had a bit of turn in it which was nice.

"I probably got a little bit greedy (at the end) there just searching to finish the innings off, but it was really well set up there by 'Pez' and 'Schutter' (Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt).

"They bowled really good lines and for Pez to get Suzie Bates out when she was starting to look pretty dangerous … I just reaped the rewards of their hard work I guess."

After a busy summer that saw Jonassen return to form and fitness through the Rebel WBBL, the Queenslander is relishing a chance to ply her wares in the 50-over game.

"I like being able to settle into a spell," she said. "In T20, you have plans to a batter that might last one or two balls, but here we can try and work batters out for multiple balls and sometimes for overs at a time.

"I love that. For me, the real key at the moment is I'm just really enjoying being back out there and playing with a smile on my face.

"It's probably showing in my performances the last couple of games as well."

Taking a five-wicket haul to seal a series win over New Zealand is special enough, but for Jonassen, Sunday's performance was made all the sweeter by the presence of two familiar faces in the crowd.

Her parents Jayne and Ray travelled from Rockhampton in northern Queensland for the match – a rare chance for them to see Jonassen wear the green and gold.

Super Perry posts maiden ODI century

They'll also travel to Melbourne for the third and final match next Sunday, where Australia will be seeking a series sweep.

"It was really special," Jonassen said. "My dad doesn't often get to come away and they haven't seen too many of my international games live.

"To have them see me get my career-best figures added to the moment.

"I'll be able to catch up with them and spend time with them this week in Melbourne, so that'll be really nice."

Australia will travel to Melbourne on Monday, where they'll have the week to prepare for next Sunday's third and final Rose Bowl ODI at Junction Oval.

The match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and the Seven Network and can be live streamed via Kayo, with news, scores and highlights on cricket.com.au and the CA Live App.
