Wickets tumble in NSW Shield clash

Bowlers dominate on an action-packed opening day between NSW and Victoria

It was a day for the bowlers at Drummoyne Oval as 17 wickets fell in the heavyweight JLT Sheffield Shield match-up between NSW and Victoria on Tuesday.

Victoria's big-name batting line-up was rolled for just 106, but the home side fared little better as a final-hour collapse saw them end day one at 7-97.

A spot in the Shield final likely awaits the victors of the penultimate-round match between the top two teams on the Shield ladder.

Pattinson's bizarre dismissal in Shield return

NSW dominated the day until suffering an extraordinary collapse to lose 7-20, including 5-10.

Remarkably, NSW put on 67 for the opening wicket with Daniel Hughes hitting a composed 45 and Nick Larkin contributing 19.

Victoria were boosted by the return from injury of James Pattinson and Test veteran Peter Siddle, who was surprisingly left out of the last match, but it was spinner Jon Holland who did most of the damage.

Holland bowled for most of the session to collect 5-27 off 14 overs, with three of the dismissals caught at slip by Cameron White.

Harry Conway carves through Victoria

Siddle picked up 2-19, while Pattinson returned 0-23 off eight overs.

NSW's collapse party overshadowed paceman Harry Conway's contribution, with the rangy paceman earning career-best figures of 5-14 from 13 overs for the Blues.

Fellow fast bowler Trent Copeland chipped in with 3-50, and spinner Steve O'Keefe (2-17) continued his recent good form.

Test opener Marcus Harris (6) suffered a rare failure, while young Will Pucovski was out for 19 after scoring a century last week.

Former Blues star Nic Maddinson (24) went in the first over after lunch, kick-starting a Victorian collapse of 6-18.
