Heat bring Sixers unstuck yet again

Brisbane Heat have leapt to second position on the WBBL ladder after thumping Sydney Sixers by seven wickets in Saturday's blockbuster at North Sydney Oval.

In a rematch of last season's final, the reigning champions were untroubled in cruising past the Sixers' modest 7-123 with 19 balls to spare, leapfrogging them and Adelaide Strikers in the standings in the process.

With her sister Grace Harris (26 not out) at the other end at the end, Laura Harris raised the Heat's fourth successive win over the Sixers by smashing Hayley Silver-Holmes over the long-on fence for her second six.

Openers Beth Mooney and Maddy Green contributed 25 apiece and No.3 Jess Jonassen top-scored with 33 to cap a fine all-round game before the Harris sisters finished with a bang to make light work of the chase.

Leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk (2-19) was the pick of the bowlers after earlier top-scoring with the bat for the Sixers who started horribly, recovered in the middle and stalled late.

Six days after combining for a record-smashing, unbroken 199-run opening stand, Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry both departed cheaply to put the Sixers on the back foot.

Healy was skittled for five by a peach from Sammy-Jo Johnson before Perry, averaging 139.50 in this WBBL campaign entering the match, was trapped plumb in front for two by Delissa Kimmince.

Van Niekerk (28), Marizanne Kapp (26), Ash Gardner (24) and Erin Burns (23) chipped in with cameos but no Sydney batter was able to convert their start or free their arms against some impressive Heat bowling.

Player-of-the-match Jonassen (2-20) and Kimmince (2-26) were the chief destroyers while Johnson (1-11) was miserly with the new rock.

Scorchers snatch thrilling final-ball win

Perth Scorchers survived a massive scare to defeat the Adelaide Strikers by two runs in a last-ball cliffhanger at Karen Rolton Oval.

Bridget Patterson, who played the knock of her life to drag the Strikers out of the mire, needed four to win on Saturday afternoon off the final ball from Heather Graham to haul in the Scorchers' 3-173.

But Patterson, who had crunched six fours and three sixes in her sizzling 60 from 32 balls, couldn't quite find the rope one last time.

Her hoick found Chloe Piparo in the deep and Patterson was run out attempting her second run.

Patterson earlier combined with Sophie Devine (58) for a 75-run partnership to give the Strikers a sniff despite an escalating asking rate.

She seized control after Devine was bowled around her legs by Nat Sciver, only to fall agonisingly short of boosting her side back to the top of the table.

The Scorchers' victory was set up by a commanding 141-run opening stand between Amy Jones (80) and Australian captain Meg Lanning (64).

After a quiet powerplay, the pair savaged the Strikers' attack before both fell to sharp catches.

Player-of-the-match Jones whacked two sixes in her 58-ball dig before Sciver (17 off seven, including two sixes) fired late to give the Strikers an imposing total to chase.

Duffin stars as the Renegades claim thriller

A stunning masterclass from captain Jess Duffin has propelled Melbourne Renegades to a last-ball, four-wicket win over Hobart Hurricanes at Junction Oval.

With one required off the final delivery to reel in the Hurricanes' 5-150, Maitlan Brown calmly flicked Nicola Carey past square leg for the winning run, snapping the Renegades' three-game WBBL losing streak.

The home team was in huge trouble earlier in the chase when they slumped to 3-12 after Hobart spearhead Belinda Vakawera (2-21) had started with a wicket-maiden and proceeded to cut through the top order.

But the Hurricanes simply had no answer for Duffin.

With the asking rate ballooning, she single-handedly dragged the Renegades from a position of peril into one of dominance by carting the bowlers to all areas of the park.

She crunched 75 off just 49 balls, including four sixes, and was well supported by Courtney Webb (33) in a match-turning 78-run fifth-wicket union.

Earlier, a 92-run partnership between Hurricanes skipper Corinne Hall and England international Fran Wilson dragged the visitors to a respectable total after they had slipped to 4-40.

Hall, who had previously mustered only 25 runs at 6.25 for the tournament, blasted her way back to form with an unbeaten 50 off 34 balls while Wilson's 45 was a fine knock but it was not enough to stop the Hurricanes' winless streak extending to five matches.

Spinners Sophie Molineux (2-25) and Molly Strano (2-29) were the pick of the Renegades' bowlers before Duffin provided the heroics with the bat.
