Tasmania triumph as reigning Shield champs remain winless

Matthew Wade's unbeaten half-century ensures hosts get their first victory of the Marsh Sheffield Shield season

Skipper Matthew Wade has guided Tasmania to a comfortable six-wicket Marsh Sheffield Shield win over defending champions Victoria in Hobart, posting his second half-century for the match.

The Test batsmen finished unbeaten on 57 as the Tigers made short work of their 139-run target on Sunday.

Tasmania resumed day four at 2-31 after rain washed out the majority of Saturday's play.

Unbeaten Wade crafts crucial half-century

Rookie Charlie Wakim (36) was aggressive to begin the morning at Bellerive Oval before he edged Peter Siddle (2-23) behind.

In a low-scoring match where only four players passed 50, Wade also top scored in Tasmania's first innings with 69.

He brought up their first Shield win of the season with a six off spinner Jon Holland after some brief confusion when players begun shaking hands while scores were level.

The Tigers set up the win on Thursday when they rolled Victoria for just 127 in their first innings.

It could have been worse if not for a quickfire 69 from Nic Maddinson, who gave national selectors a reminder of his credentials ahead of the first Test against Pakistan on November 21.

Test opener Marcus Harris hit a solid 60 in Victoria's second dig, while highly-rated youngster Will Pucovski managed just 10 for the game.

Vics fight hard but Tigers close in on victory

Seamer Jackson Bird took a match-haul of seven wickets and has 15 from his two first-class starts this season.

After winning their fourth Shield title in five seasons in March, Victoria are without a win from their opening matches.
