Hazlewood ruled out of second ODI

Australia paceman Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of Friday's second Gillette Series ODI against England due to illness, meaning WA paceman Jhye Richardson is set to make his debut at the Gabba.

Team officials yesterday flagged that Hazlewood was ill with a virus, and today, after failing to recover sufficiently, it was announced the right-arm quick will return home to Sydney. 

Hazlewood was rested for the opening ODI as Australia selected his Test fast-bowling partners Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, as well as debutant Andrew Tye, in a three-man pace attack that was complemented by leg-spinner Adam Zampa. 

With Cummins already rested for the clash in Brisbane, Hazlewood's absence leaves Australia with just three quicks to choose from - Starc, Tye and Richardson - on a pitch that David Warner yesterday said would be excellent for batting while still offering something for the quicks. 

"You're always confident as an Australian batsman when you come and look at this wicket, that's for sure," Warner said.

"It's always got good bounce and carry for the bowlers as well."

Hazlewood is the latest player to be struck down by illness in recent weeks, joining teammates Tim Paine, Warner, Steve Smith and Patrick Cummins as well as England captain Joe Root and batsman James Vince, who have all been affected by illness since Christmas.

Cummins and Smith both had an upset stomach during the fourth Magellan Ashes Test in Melbourne, minor complaints that didn't significantly hamper their performances.

Warner too was ruled fit to play the first ODI despite not taking part in the lead-in training sessions due to illness, while Paine was ill yesterday with a gastro bug but took part in some 'keeping drills with coach Darren Lehmann at the Gabba this morning.

Root was so sick during the fifth Test in Sydney that he was hospitalised due to severe dehydration after the fourth day of the match. He bravely left his hospital bed on day five to resume his innings, posting a half-century before his condition became too much for him and he retired his innings.

As Australia completed a victory that handed them a 4-0 series win, Root was asleep in the dressing-rooms.

England's Test No.3 Vince was another to come down with an illness, missing what would have been his debut for Sydney Thunder in the KFC Big Bash on January 11 before playing for the franchise two days later.

The second ODI begins at 1.20pm local time in Brisbane on Friday, with England boasting a one-nil lead in the series.
