The heroes: It was very much a team effort from the Proteas with no batsman reaching 30 and no bowler taking three wickets. With the bat, the experienced heads of Faf du Plessis (27 off 15) and Quinton de Kock (22 off 16) led the way, while Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo took two wickets.

The moment: Chris Morris wasn't picked to play any of South Africa's three ODIs on this tour so the fast-bowling allrounder must have been sweating for his opportunity in this T20I. While he was out first ball in the final over of the first innings, it was with the ball that he had an immediate impact, taking the massive wickets of D'Arcy Short and Chris Lynn with the fourth and sixth deliveries of his opening over. The Aussie pair has delighted KFC Big Bash League crowds in recent seasons, and the stage was set for their big-hitting exploits, but it wasn't to be. Short picked out cover from the first ball he faced, while Lynn (14) was nowhere on a beautiful inswinging yorker, and the decisive double blow of the match belonged to Morris.

The stat: Aaron Finch has now been dismissed for single digits in each of his last five innings (1, 0, 3, 1, 7), his longest drought without double-figures in T20I cricket.

The victim: Local boy Ben McDermott was up against it from the outset, coming to the crease with Australia already four wickets down and needing 72 from 37. Seemingly feeling forced to innovate, he unsuccessfully tried a reverse sweep, before guiding an attempted ramp straight to de Kock behind the stumps.

The consolation effort: South Africa smashed 42 from their first three overs but the all-round brilliance of Glenn Maxwell stemmed the flow; he conceded just five runs from his opening over, took the wicket of Quinton de Kock with the first ball of his next, then managed a spectacular juggling catch on the midwicket boundary to send du Plessis on his way. He took a second catch and then looked Australia's most likely with the bat, pinching singles where he could and hitting his team's only two sixes of the innings in a fighting 38 (23).

The wash-up: South Africa fly out on Sunday as victors in both the ODI series and this rain-affected one-off T20I. It has been a highly-successful white-ball tour for Faf du Plessis' side, who aren't scheduled to be on these shores again until the ICC World T20 tournament in October 2020. For the Aussies, it was another disappointing result, with a failure of the top six again the most worrying factor. At Metricon they had a legitimate disclaimer – the unique circumstances of a 10-over contest – however the one-sided nature of the outcome will remain food for thought for the playing group, who have now lost four straight T20Is heading into a three-match series against India.
