Brotherly love as twin tons match Waughs

Marsh brothers join Waughs and Chappells in posting hundreds in same Test innings as England swelter at the SCG

Shaun and Mitchell Marsh have followed in the footsteps of the legendary Waugh twins to be the latest pair of brothers to score a century in the same innings of a Test match.

Shaun picked up the two runs he needed to complete his sixth Test hundred from the fifth ball of day four in Sydney, while Mitch brought up triple figures just after drinks in the morning session, his second Test century.

There was a moment of madness when the Marsh brothers embraced mid-pitch in celebration after completing the single to bring up Mitch’s hundred. But the ball hadn’t found the rope and the pair disengaged and quickly returned to their respective ends to finish the second run before laughing it off and soaking up the standing ovation from the SCG crowd.

The pair also combined for their first century stand together – 169 runs – in just their fourth innings at the crease.

Prior to this Test, Steve and Mark Waugh were the last Australian brothers to post a century in the same innings, against England at The Oval in 2001 when Steve scored 157 despite a leg injury and Mark caressed his way to 120.

The Waugh brothers also added 231 against the West Indies in Kingston in 1995, with both posting hundreds, but the Australian partnership record for brothers belongs to Greg and Ian Chappell.

The Chappells put on 264 in the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington in 1974 as Greg posted an unbeaten 247 and Ian scored 145 batting at No.3.

In the second innings of the same match the Chappells again scored centuries, with Greg making 133 and Ian 121.

The overall highest Test partnership between brothers belongs to Zimbabwe siblings Andy and Grant Flower, who put on 269 against Pakistan in Harare in 1995. Grant posted 201 and Andy 156.
