Renshaw added to Australia squad

Queensland opener Matthew Renshaw is in line for a recall to Australia's Test side with the batsman to fly to South Africa immediately after the JLT Sheffield Shield final in Brisbane.

Renshaw will fly to Johannesburg this evening to join the under-siege tourists ahead of Friday's final Test against South Africa in the wake of the Cape Town ball-tampering crisis.

Confirmation of the left-hander's addition to the Test squad came as he was batting Queensland towards a title-clinching draw on the final day of the Shield final in Brisbane.

A short time ago, Renshaw was 18 not out at Allan Border Field with the Bulls chasing 128 to win from 32 overs after a desperate last-day declaration from Tasmania.

It's understood preparations had been made for Renshaw to be substituted out of the Shield final, but he will instead fly out of Australia after the match has finished.

Renshaw has been in tremendous touch since the Christmas break, bouncing back from the lean trot that saw him replaced by Cameron Bancroft for the Magellan Ashes by posting three centuries in as many games to lead the Bulls into the Shield final.

He last pulled on the Baggy Green in September for the second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

Test captain Steve Smith has been suspended by the International Cricket Council for the fourth Test and Bancroft copped three demerit points and a 75 per cent match fee deduction.

Further sanctions from Cricket Australia could follow pending the outcome of an investigation led by Iain Roy, CA's head of integrity. Smith and vice-captain David Warner were stood down from their leadership roles before day four of the third Test.

There has been speculation others could be added to the Test squad, with Renshaw's state teammate Joe Burns a prime candidate, but CA yet to confirm any other call-ups.

The only other spare batsman in Australia's Test squad is Peter Handscomb, who looks likely to resume his post in the middle order as a straight swap for the already-suspended Smith.

Warner and Bancroft are yet to receive any sanctions from CA but Renshaw's addition is a strong suggestion he could feature at the top of Australia's order in Johannesburg.
