Neser, Tremain, Bailey take home top gongs

Michael Neser, George Bailey and Chris Tremain were the big winners from the first round of state association awards for the 2017-18 season.

In ceremonies held Thursday evening, the trio took out the gongs as the best male players from Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria respectively from the domestic summer that concluded this week.

Neser took home the Ian Healy Trophy for the second year running after finishing as the JLT Sheffield Shield's second-leading wicket-taker (39 wickets at 21.84) and helping the Bulls claim their eighth first-class title earlier this week.

The allrounder became just the second player (after Victoria and Sydney Thunder leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed) to win a Sheffield Shield and KFC Big Bash League title in the same season.

Queensland Fire allrounder Sammy-Jo Johnson was crowned the state's best female player having collected a joint-most nine wickets at 16.44 while she was also the second highest run-scorer with 157 runs at 31.40 for the season.

Losing Shield final skipper Bailey claimed the Ricky Ponting Medal as Tasmania's player of the season, finishing 26 votes clear of runner-up Jake Doran. Somewhat surprisingly, it's the first time Bailey has won the award.

Tasmania Roar wicketkeeper Georgie Redmayne, who was awarded the Betty Wilson Young Cricketer of the Year last month, was named the Apple Isle's standout player from the Women's National Cricket League season.

Fresh off receiving the overall Sheffield Shield player of the season gong, Tremain (51 wickets at 21.07) took out the Bill Lawry Medal as the leading Bushranger from the four-day competition.

Leg-spinner Kristen Beams was named the VicSpirit's best WNCL player, while siblings Will and Annabel Sutherland were awarded the Future Star Awards.

Each association also named their KFC Big Bash League and Rebel Women's Big Bash League players of the season. 

Amy Satterthwaite (Melbourne Renegades), Erin Osborne (Melbourne Stars), Hayley Matthews (Hobart Hurricanes) and Beth Mooney (Brisbane Heat) took out the WBBL awards.

For the men, Glenn Maxwell (Melbourne Stars), Tom Cooper (Melbourne Renegades), Yasir Shah (Brisbane Heat) and D'Arcy Short (Hobart Hurricanes) were the standouts.
