Cummins ruled out of Perth ODI

Paceman Pat Cummins has joined opener Aaron Finch in missing the fifth Gillette ODI against England in Perth today due to injury.

Cummins, who was player-of-the-match in Australia's win in Adelaide on Friday, has been withdrawn from the match due to a tight hamstring.

The Aussies have opted to take no risks with the star quick ahead of the upcoming Qantas Test Tour of South Africa. Medical staff say the injury is minor and they have no concerns it will hamper his preparations for the four-Test series against the Proteas.

One of Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye is expected to take the place of Cummins alongside frontline quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Alternatively, if conditions suit the fast men, both Richardson and Tye could play and spinner Adam Zampa sit out.

The Aussies were without Finch in Adelaide and the in-form opener hasn't travelled to Perth as he too manages a minor hamstring problem. He's expected to be fit for the upcoming Gillette T20 Tri-Series against England and New Zealand.

On Saturday, Australia captain Steve Smith left the door ajar for Glenn Maxwell's readmission to the side after he'd been left out of the initial squad.

Selectors pointed to Maxwell's below-par returns from his last 20 games in the 50-over format for Australia as the reason for the axing and Smith suggested he needed to "train smarter" to force his way back into the team.

But having re-joined the squad in Adelaide - where Australia got their first win of the series with a tight three-wicket victory - as cover for Finch, Smith said Maxwell could return for Sunday's clash which is expected to see a 55,000-strong crowd at the brand new Optus Stadium.

"He might get his chance tomorrow, we'll see how we go," a tight-lipped Smith told reporters prior to seeing the pitch on Saturday.

Asked if Maxwell could bat in the top-order, Smith said: "He could. It just depends on what we want to do and who's around. There's no reason he can't bat in the top three at some point."

With Travis Head, who made the most of a promotion to the opening spot with a match-winning 96 in the Australia Day ODI, and vice-captain David Warner seemingly locks at Nos. 1 and 2, Cameron White would appear the most likely candidate to make way for Maxwell should selectors opt to make a change.

White has made 3 and 17 since being elevated to first-drop and said earlier this week he had not been given (nor expected) a guaranteed run of games in the position.
