Ashes winners climb ICC Test rankings

Australia's 4-0 Magellan Ashes victory has seen them trade places with England on the International Cricket Council's Test team rankings and move into third position.

Australia, on 104 points, now trail India (124 points) and South Africa (111), while England have slipped to fifth on 99 points behind New Zealand on 100.

Steve Smith said the Ashes triumph was a team effort as each of the 13 players used by Australia contributed during the series.

"It's been outstanding," Smith said. "Everyone's had a role to play and had some impact on this series.

"You see the two Marsh boys … they have been magnificent.

"All of the bowlers have been great.

"Tim Paine has been exceptional behind the stumps and scoring valuable runs at time as well.

"That's what's been so special about it; it hasn't been just one or two guys stepping up and doing the job and you can't really win an Ashes series if that's the case.

"It's been good that so many people have stepped up at different times to help us win this series."

Australia's next Test assignment is away to South Africa, who are currently hosting India in a three-Test series with the first match at Newlands in the balance.

Smith's charges are unable to catch India at the end of the annual rankings period in April, but they can leapfrog the Proteas into second place.

There are two possible scenarios for that to take place.

First, South Africa would have to lose to both India and Australia.

Second, South Africa would have to draw with India and lose to Australia by at least two Tests.

The four-Test tour begins from March 1 in Durban, while their Ashes adversaries travel to New Zealand to take on the Black Caps in two Tests from March 22.
