WA teenager snares 5-24 in stunning debut

WA allrounder Cameron Green enters the record books on debut at Blundstone Arena

Western Australia teenager Cameron Green has become the youngest player to take a Sheffield Shield five-wicket haul on debut after a stunning performance on day one against Tasmania at Blundstone arena.

The 17-year-old fast-bowling allrounder overcame some early jitters in Hobart to finish with 5-24 from his 8.1 overs as the Tigers were bowled out for 198.

At 17 years and 252 days, Green is also the second youngest player to ever take a Sheffield Shield five-fer. South Australia’s Shane George took 6-51 in his fourth Shield match aged 17 years and 87 days in 1988 to be the youngest ever.

After WA skipper Adam Voges won the toss and chose to bowl first on a green pitch, Green opened his account with a no-ball in his first delivery.

But from there his confidence grew, as he trapped Jordan Silk lbw for 24, before he had Beau Webster caught at second slip two balls later.

Simon Milenko and Cameron Boyce were Green's third and fourth victims, leaving the Tigers 9-128, and while tailenders Sam Rainbird and Cameron Stevenson frustrated the Warriors with a 70-run partnership, Green wrapped up his five-wicket haul when he ended Rainbird’s knock on 40.

His figures are the second best for a WA debutant.

Green is the third youngest player to debut for the Warriors behind Len Pavy and current Test squad member Shaun Marsh.

He was handed his Shield opportunity when Warriors coach Justin Langer opted to play four quicks on the grassy Blundstone Arena pitch, making him the 26th player to appear in the competition before reaching their 18th birthday – putting him in an elite group of players that includes Victor Trumper, David Boon and Ricky Ponting.

Green claimed 4-30 and scored 51 not out from 23 balls in a player-of-the-match performance as WA claimed the Under-19 National Championships title last December, a performance that prompted WA under-19s coach Stewart Walters to note: “This guy is going to play Test cricket, so to get him in as early as possible would be great for WA cricket”.
