Nevill leaves field after being struck

Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper Peter Nevill briefly left the field with a head knock after a nasty bounce in the field in his side's KFC Big Bash clash with Sydney Sixers.

Nevill set himself to collect a return from the outfield when the ball took a strange deviation from the edge of the SCG pitch, skidding on and collecting him in the head and knocking him from his feet.

The 30-year-old got to his feet and looked to have dusted the incident off, but was reviewed by the Renegades team doctor, who initially let him carry on.

A short time later Nevill was ushered from the field for a concussion test, with Aaron Finch taking the gloves.

The gloveman, who didn't get an opportunity to bat in the 'Gades total of 6-170, returned to action soon after.

Australia captain Steve Smith, who was commentating at the time, explained the process of the concussion test Nevill had undertaken, describing it as a "reaction test to begin with, then a memory test".  

"We've been told that if the doctor wants you to come off and do the test, you have to do it," Smith said. "It's a sort of memory test - you have these playing cards come up on the computer screen ... it can be a difficult test to do at the best of times. 

"Each of us do a baseline test so they know our reaction times and things like that."

Teammate Callum Ferguson, on the Network TEN commentary mic, later confirmed that Nevill was fine after the incident, adding that he felt the "playing it safe" attitude adopted by Cricket Australia was the right one. 

During the Sydney Test, young Australia opener Matt Renshaw was hit in the helmet twice across the match, with team doctor Peter Brukner ultimately ruling him out of the Test before Australia had batted in their second innings.
