Tamim avoids injury after 'scary' incident

Key Bangladesh batsman lucky to escape harm after falling through broken glass door

Bangladesh star opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has had a lucky escape after falling through a glass dressing room door after reportedly flinging his bat in frustration at a practice game dismissal.

Tamim was saved from serious injury by his batting protective gear, with his batting gloves and pads bearing the brunt of his fall through the glass door.

Having resumed on 23 on the second day of Bangladesh's intra-squad practice match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, site of the second Test against Australia next month, Tamim was run out having added just six more runs.

Local media reported Tamim, frustrated at his run out, flung his bat which hit the door. After that impact, when the batsman arrived to push the door open, the shattered and Tamim fell through.

"The moment I pushed on the door the glass broke entirely," the 28-year-old told the Daily Star.

"I fell to the ground as well and if anyone saw the state of my pads, they would know how dangerous the accident could have been.

"Thanks to Allah that I got off from such a dangerous situation. The injury is nothing serious, I am just thankful since the situation could have been bad.

"The injured area sometimes stretches the skin but it's nothing serious."

Tamim still required stitches after the incident and while Bangladesh selector Minhajul Abedin admitted the incident was "a bit scary", he expects him to be available for Bangladesh's final warm-up game on August 16.

"We hope that the stitches will be cut within a day or two and we expect him to be fit before the practice match," Abedin said.

"It was a bit scary initially because he is one of our major players and we would not like to lose him before this crucial Test series against Australia."

Tamim has a history of physical altercations with opposition players in a fiery career. In 2015 at the Chittagong venue he clashed with South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock in a Test match, and was a central figure in the heated exchanges with Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow after the home side beat England in an ODI last October.

Tamim's scare came to light after fast bowler Rubel Hossain slipped and fell in his delivery stride on the same day of the practice match in Chittagong.

It was reported in Bangladesh media that Rubel had struggled to get to his feet after slipping in his delivery stride and collapsed to the ground at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. He later recovered and was able to continue bowling.

Handscomb shines with century in Darwin

The third day of Bangladesh's practice match was a complete washout as the monsoon season lingers in the subcontinent country.

The venue of Australia's tour warm-up match remains under a cloud with the scheduled ground of Fatullah flooded by contaminated water that has leaked into the stadium from adjoining factories.

Last month, Tamim pulled out of a county stint with Essex after reports of a "hate crime" against his family.

Tamim had been contracted to play eight T20 matches for the Essex Eagles in the English domestic T20 competition, but left the country after just one match.

He cited "personal reasons" for the sudden departure, and later took to social media to deny reports in Bangladesh media his wife had been the target of an attack.

Tamim is Bangladesh's highest international run scorer with more than 10,000 to his name in all forms of the game and was one of the country's top players in their run to the semi-finals of the recent Champions Trophy where he averaged 73.25 for the tournament played in England.

He has played 49 Tests and 173 ODIs with a combined 17 centuries in international cricket.
