Tournament hosts lose vital member of bowling attack to side strain suffered in opening game win over Bangladesh
Woakes ruled out of Champions Trophy
England's worst fears have been confirmed after key fast-bowler Chris Woakes was ruled out for the rest of their Champions Trophy campaign.
The England and Wales Cricket Board issued a statement on Friday saying Woakes' tournament was over after suffering a left side strain in Thursday's opening match against Bangladesh.
A replacement will be named "in due course", the ECB said.
Woakes managed just two overs with the new ball against the Tigers before leaving the field, playing no further part in the match.
England secured a commanding eight-wicket victory thanks to a terrific ton from Joe Root, who himself was hobbled after appearing to roll his ankle while batting.
Skipper Eoin Morgan however insisted Root hadn't been in a great deal of pain.
"Joe is all right," Morgan told reporters after play.
"He wasn't in extreme pain. It was manageable.
"Given that we have four days between now and the next game, hopefully he'll rest up well and be fully fit."
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has suggested Test quick Stuart Broad, who hasn't played an international limited-overs match since February 2016, could be an ideal replacement for Woakes.
"Chris Woakes' injury is a big blow," Hussain wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
"I would be tempted to bring in Stuart Broad. He's not played white-ball cricket for England for over a year, but the possible absence of Woakes deprives Morgan of experience in his attack, and we saw how Jake Ball found it tough in his first major tournament.
"Other options are Steven Finn, Toby Roland-Jones and Tom Curran, but with Broad you've got a guy who has an aura.
"When England come up against stronger sides, they won't ease up in the final overs like Bangladesh did here.
"And when that happens, a guy like Broad is exactly what you need to keep control."
England's next match is against New Zealand on Tuesday.
