Wade's all-time Under 19 record broken

Emerging New South Wales batsman Ryan Hackney has broken Matthew Wade's all-time runs record at Cricket Australia's Under 19 National Championships.

Hackney achieved the feat across three tournaments and 22 innings, surpassing Australia wicketkeeper Wade's record of 1091 runs during the recent tournament in Tasmania.

The 18-year-old now has a total of 1,104 runs at Under 19 level, after scoring 127 runs for the Cricket Australia XI in 2015-16, 595 runs for NSW Metro in '16-17 and 382 runs in '17-18.

Wade, who has gone to represent Australia in all three formats, set his mark over 27 innings in four U19 tournaments between '03-04 to '06-07.

Hackney, a left-handed opener, broke the record during the NSW Metro's 120-run victory over the CA XI in Friday's U19 final and admitted he had no idea he'd eclipsed Wade's decade-old mark.

"(I had) no idea… I got told today after I got out," Hackney told cricket.com.au. 

"I walked up here after I got out, and Beau (coach Beau Casson) said congratulations. I was like, 'I just got out?'"

For Hackney, the feat wasn't as important as claiming the title.

The Penrith Cricket Club product, who represented Australia U19s earlier this year, set the new mark in his knock of 21, sharing in an 80-run opening stand with player-of-the-match Jack Edwards (147 off 125).

"It's good I guess, but I think it's even better to win a championship," Hackney said.

"It was a really good team performance in the end by the boys. We were gaining momentum all the way through the Championships, and to put in what was our best performance in the final was really good from us."

For the past two tournaments, Hackney has been the Under 19 National Championships' second-leading run-scorer.

Had it not been for Victoria's Will Pucovski breaking the runs record for a single Under 19s tournament, with 650 runs last summer, Hackney would have held that record also with 595 runs.

One of the unlucky players to miss out on selection for Australia's 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup squad, Hackney will however get the chance to represent his country again this year.

He has been selected to represent Australia Under 19s in a three-match Youth ODI series against Pakistan in Melbourne later this month - and will also feature in the KFC Big Bash League Pathways match at The Gabba in January 2018.

"It should be a good opportunity against what should be a good (Pakistan) team. A good opportunity to test myself against an international team again," he said.
