Australia sent in as England make a change

England hand a debut to Craig Overton in Adelaide as they look to respond to first-Test loss

Second Test Session Times (local): 2-4pm | 4:20-6:20pm | 7-9pm

England have won the toss and elected to bowl first as the tourists handed Craig Overton a debut for the second Magellan Ashes Test in Adelaide.

On a cloudy day in the South Australian captain, England captain Joe Root opted to unleash his swing bowlers with the pink ball on Australia's top order. Australia skipper Steve Smith said he would have elected to bat had he won the toss.

England are the first team since 1992 to elect to bowl first in an Adelaide Test and the first team to do so in a day-night Test.

A day after Smith named an unchanged XI for the second match of the series, England confirmed Overton would come into their side in place of fellow quick Jake Ball.

A right-arm paceman and handy lower-order batsman, Overton has 195 first-class wickets to his name, mostly for county Somerset, and replaces Ball after the Nottinghamshire quick took just one wicket in Brisbane last week.

The 23-year-old Overton was handed his cap by former England spinner John Emburey before play.

England also confirmed that allrounder Moeen Ali would be fit to bowl despite nursing a finger injury at the Gabba.

The only concern for the Australians leading into the match was the fitness of their three fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. But after successfully completing Thursday's practice session without a worry, the trio will line up together again at Adelaide Oval.

South Australia swing bowler Chadd Sayers has flown to Cairns to link up with his West End Redbacks teammates for their JLT Sheffield Shield clash against the myFootDr Queensland Bulls starting Sunday, while reserve quick Jackson Bird will join Tasmania for their Hobart clash with New South Wales.

Bird stayed with the Australians until the start of play in Brisbane before he was inserted into Tasmania's Shield match in Adelaide, where he took eight wickets in the Tigers' first win of the summer.

Captain Smith, alongside head coach Darren Lehmann and assistants Brad Haddin and David Saker, inspected the Adelaide Oval wicket on Friday and said it appeared to be a hybrid of the pitches seen previously at the venue.

Anderson among cricket's 'biggest sledgers': Smith

"It looks like a bit harder than we've probably seen it for a while for a pink-ball game," Smith said. "It looks like there is slightly less grass. I'd say it's somewhere between an old Adelaide wicket and the newer wicket we've seen over the last couple of years. I think not as much sideways movement.

"There will still be good pace in the wicket but I think it looks a pretty good wicket."
