WBBL|03: What you need to catch up on

As records tumbled and boundaries were smashed on the opening weekend of the Rebel WBBL, it was clear the standard for the third edition of the competition was going to be high.

The seven matches that have followed have not disappointed, with no shortage of highlights, big scores and tense competition.

The Scorchers and Heat went to battle in Wollongong in the first game after the opening weekend and it was Elyse Villani’s unbeaten 74 off 61 balls, which included a six to seal victory, that was the highlight as Perth claimed their second win of the tournament.

Batting first, the Sixers failed to get going and posted their lowest score of the season so far. Making matters worse, star allrounder Ashleigh Gardner suffered a knock to the grille while batting and was dismissed for seven soon after, before being ruled out of the fielding innings - and the match that followed - due to concussion. 

The Stars met the Thunder twice, including the popular Border Bash but unfortunately for the Melbourne team, there weren't too many highlights with the Stars still chasing their first win of the season.

However, there was plenty for the Thunder to smile about with Rachael Haynes taking out back-to-back player of the match awards after two huge half-centuries.

Nicola Carey and Harmanpreet Kaur were the pick of the bowlers for the Thunder in Albury, with Carey setting off a collapse in the Border Bash.

The Scorchers' unbeaten start to the season was undone by the Brisbane Heat in their second run in at Allan Border Field on Friday. There were plenty of highlights for the home team, including a hanger from Laura Wolvaardt, a captain's knock from Kirby Short and player-of-the-match honours for West Indian Deandra Dottin.

It was Short's half-century and Dottin's 45 off 48 balls that steadied the Heat after two early wickets and lead the to victory.

The Renegades and Strikers played out arguably the game of WBBL|03 so far, with their first encounter coming down to the final ball.

Susie Bates, coming off an opening weekend century, was once again the hero for the Strikers taking a brilliant caught and bowled on the final ball to deny the Renegades victory.

English opener Tammy Beaumont was also in fine touch for Adelaide with 45 off 44, but it was Renegades captain Amy Satterthwaite that came out with the most runs across the two matches.

She scored 56 off 40 on Saturday before following up with 49 off 37 on Sunday to help the Renegades run away with a win in their second meeting.

The Sixers found form again against the Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday, Ellyse Perry and Sara McGlashan lead the way with scores of 65 and 44, but all the highlights were reserved for the bowlers.

Hurricanes’ Hayley Matthews would have felt like the plays of the day were hers at the innings break, after her back-to-back diving run outs.

But not to be outdone, Sixers allrounder Dane van Niekerk took the honour from Matthews with her first ever WBBL hat-trick.
