He made headlines as a substitute fielder for Australia last month against Pakistan but the setting for Mickey Edwards’ latest heroics was a far cry from a New Year’s Test at the SCG.

Edwards, a rookie-contracted NSW fast-bowler recovering from stress fractures in his back, turned out in a fifth-grade NSW Premier Cricket fixture over the past two weekends and arrived in the middle of Kensington Oval with Manly-Warringah in trouble at 3-45.

Playing as a specialist No.5 batsman, the chances of the blond curly-haired quick helping his side overhaul Randwick-Petersham’s first-innings total of 140 appeared slim.

In 105 previous games across all grades for Manly, Edwards managed 254 runs at 9.07 with a highest score of 32, which came from No.11 in a fourth-grade fixture back in 2012. He’d posted just six other double-figure scores in his NSW Premier Cricket career.

But Edwards put all of that behind him when he joined opener Will Outred, and together they put on 198 for the fourth wicket to see Manly take first-innings points, and along the way he eclipsed his career-best score, notched his maiden half-century and then incredibly reached triple-figures.

The 22-year-old finished unbeaten on 103, with Outred also not out on 100, both surely pushing claims for a promotion to the fourth XI at the least.

Edwards wasn’t the only Blues squad member to rescue his side on the weekend, with batsman Ben Rohrer posting his second double-century of the season to see Fairfield-Liverpool to a three-wicket win.

Rohrer’s side were 2-11 when he came to the crease, as the left-hander dismantled the Northern District attack in a stunning 235-ball effort.

The former Australia T20 player finished unbeaten on 201 to help his side chase down 328 late in the day, becoming just the fifth player in NSW Premier Cricket history to score two double-tons in one season. 

The first four players to achieve the feat were Norbert Phillips (in 1929-1930), Sir Donald Bradman (1931-1932), Greg Mail (2009-2010) and Ryan Gibson (2015-2016).

In Melbourne, Test paceman James Pattinson continued his stellar season with the bat for his Victoria Premier Cricket side Dandenong, striking his second century of the summer.

The Panthers were 3-41 when Pattinson arrived in the middle but the left-hander was in fine form, crunching 19 boundaries on the way 131 to help his side reach 8-361 at stumps on day one of their clash with Melbourne.

The 17-Test quick now has 502 runs at 62.75 for the season from just eight innings and sits eighth among the competition’s leading run-scorers.

Other Victoria Bushrangers players to have days out were leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed, who claimed 6-32 for Melbourne University, and allrounder Dan Christian, who snared 5-42 before pinch-hitting 41 off 39 balls with the knowledge he’d miss the second week of Monash Tigers’ match due to Sheffield Shield duties.
