WA paceman signs first BBL contract, joining Hurricanes for the next two seasons
Hurricanes lure Moody from the west
Highly-rated Western Australian David Moody will be in line to make his KFC Big Bash League debut this summer after Hobart Hurricanes confirmed the fast bowler has signed a two-year deal with the club.
Moody, the nephew of former Australia allrounder Tom, has played 19 first-class matches for the Warriors since making his debut in 2015 but has never been on a BBL roster.
The tall right-armer has previously trained with reigning champions Perth Scorchers and been on their supplementary list, but hasn't been able to win a spot in their strong pace battery which has featured the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff, Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson.
Moody picked up six wickets at 35.83 in WA's title-winning JLT One-Day Cup team this season and says he's looking forward to linking up with Adam Griffith, the Warriors' former bowling coach who is now Tasmania's head coach and an assistant with the Hurricanes.
"There are some great players with the Scorchers and I’ve learnt a lot from them, but to actually play is an experience I’m really looking forward to," the 22-year-old said.
"I’ve done a lot of work with Adam Griffith who’s down there now so it will be good to work with him.
"Wherever the Hurricanes’ coaching staff see me being able to contribute I’m happy to take that on board, but traditionally with WA my aim has been to intimidate batsman and be aggressive.
"I’ll look to try and do that for the Hurricanes."
Moody will join fellow Warrior D'Arcy Short on the Apple Isle for the Big Bash, with the pair among a select few WA players who will leave Perth for the tournament.
"When the news got to D’Arcy he came straight over to me at training and congratulated me," said Moody.
"I’ve played with him for a couple of years now and really enjoy playing with him so to have a friendly face over there will be great."
The Hurricanes have now filled 17 of their 18 available spots on their roster for BBL|07 and will announce the final member of their squad in the coming weeks.
Hobart's Rebel WBBL side, meanwhile, have confirmed England international Lauren Winfield will play for them this summer following two seasons with Brisbane Heat.
The signing of Winfield, a member of England's ongoing Commonwealth Bank Women's Ashes campaign, comes after the men's side announced compatriots Tymal Mills and Tom Curran as their two overseas players.
She replaces her England skipper Heather Knight, who will miss the BBL this summer to rest an ongoing foot injury.
"It’s great that we’ve signed Tom Curran and Tymal Mills for the BBL, so hopefully the fans back home in England can really get behind us and the Hurricanes," the 27-year-old opening batter said.
"Hopefully we’re well-supported in Tasmania as well.
"The conditions in Australia are very different to England – the ball doesn’t tend to move laterally as much and as a batter that’s something I’m really looking forward to.
"The surfaces are pretty flat with good bounce and carry so as a batter that’s something I’m looking forward to."
