Match Recap: 'Canes defeat Heat

The score: Brisbane Heat 122 (Mandhana 40, Matthews 5-19) in 20 overs lost to Hobart Hurricanes 2-123  (Redmayne  64no) in 18.2 overs by eight  wickets

The hero: What a spell from Hayley Matthews!  West Indies allrounder became the leading wicket-taker in the WBBL|02 with stunning figures of 5-19 from 3.4 overs. It was the first time a bowler has taken five wickets in an innings in WBBL|02. Matthews caused havoc for the Heat batters with her crafty off-breaks, deceiving them in flight and turn. She first broke the crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 54 between Smriti Mandhana and Delissa Kimmince by having the former stumped by wicketkeeper Georgia Redmayne. From that moment onwards Matthews proved to be unplayable as she snared four more wickets in 13 balls.

The support cast: It was a perfect start for the Hurricanes with Julie Hunter dismissing Beth Mooney in the first over of the match. Mooney had blasted 78 from 60 balls against the Hurricanes 24 hours earlier, but the left-hander had no answer to a hooping inswinger from Hunter. The medium-pacer was then gifted a wicket when Kirby Short blunted a full toss straight to midwicket, before sending Lauren Winfield back to the pavilion by taking a stunning one-handed catch. Hunter finished with figures of 3-19 from four overs to put the Heat in a commanding position from the outset. 

The innings: Georgia Redmayne made short work of the modest target of 123 by scoring her first half-century of the tournament. Redmayne has flown under the radar all season but with such a delightful knock, she is sure to grab plenty of attention over the coming weeks. Her innings contained eight boundaries as she guided the Hurricanes to a comfortable win. 

The Catch: Former Southern Stars medium-pacer Julie Hunter took one of the catches of WBBL|02. Hunter reacted in a flash in her follow-through to latch on to a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Heat batter Lauren Winfield. 

The consolation act: There has been plenty of hype about Mandhana and the Indian superstar showed what she was capable of by scoring a breezy 40 from 33 balls. Mandhana rescued the Heat from a precarious position of 4-38 with some elegant stroke-play on both sides of the wicket. Mandhana used her subcontinental wrists to great effect to strike six beautiful boundaries.

Next stop: The Heat now head home to play the Renegades at Allan Border Field while the Hurricanes take on the Sixers at North Sydney Oval on 13th January.
